Hi, I posted this in another thread, but it seems pretty dead, so I'm posting here as well...

Hi Guys,

for my dissertation I decided to make a simple sailing simulator, its nothing serious, and its definetly not Virtual Skipper (it was just me on a computer for a long time...)

Anyway, it would be good if i could have some feedback from anyone,

It should run on any browser and machine, provided you have the latest version of Java installed
http://www.cs.st-andrews.ac.uk/%7Ecdp4/sail -
http://www.cs.st-andrews.ac.uk/~cdp4/sail

any questions, comments etc. please direct them to cdp4@st-andrews.ac.uk or leave them on here.

thanks

Craig

(oh a few things to note, the boat cant sail off of the 2D map, so if the 3D model appears to stop for no reason, look at that.
Also if you change wind/tide settings, please make sure you click back on one of the other windows to continue playing, or it wont register keys to work)

controls are on the website, but its pretty simple,

< and > to turn Left and Right
A and Z to pull sail in and out
UP arrow and DOWN arrow to lift and lower dagger board

note: I have been developing this with the idea it could possibly be used to help teaching beginners at sailing, so when using it keep that in mind.

Not bad for starters! Definitely better than I could do! Keep us posted with developments.

Seems to be a problem if you haven't got JRE 1.5 or
newer.

An error occurred while launching/running the
application.

Title: NaviSim 3D
Vendor: Craig Paul
Category: Download Error

The application has requested a version of the Java 2
platform (JRE) that is currently not locally installed.
Java Web Start was unable to automatically download and
install the requested version. The JRE version must be
installed manually.

Error Code 11 (11 Could not locate requested version)
returned from server when accessing resource:

I think that's why Craig wrote this:

Have manually installed Java 1.6 now and it works great.

Not criticisms but suggestions.

Some marks to sail around would be nice.

VMG in the dashboard would be good.

my supervisor has been getting on at me to put marks in, I'll look into it, it shouldnt be too hard.

We actually built a controller for it as well, with a mainsheet and tiller extension, so you can hook it up to a projector.
