Having just purchased and received today a bottle Starbrite "Non-skid deck cleaner", thinking this was a product that would clean my deck and not make it slippery, rather than what it actually is - a clenaer for a non-skid deck. So, does anyone know if I can use this on gel coat and get a good result? Or should I just go and get some boat shampoo/Fairy liquid?

I've often found 'Cif' ('Jif') good for cleaning non slip gelcoat areas on the side decks along with a nail scrubbing brush. Although believed to be 'non-scouring', I would still consider it as being a very mild abrasive.
