I hope this request is within the forum rules - it's well intentioned.

Our Council run Outdoor Activities Centre (Hengistbury Head Outdoor Education Centre in Bournemouth) is under threat of closure.

Each year, thousands of school kids go there for outdoor activities, including kayaking & sailing. It helps disabled & disadvantaged kids - many with learning difficulties who really wouldn't be able to sail at regular clubs.

I'm a supporter of the Centre (which is an RYA training & Onboard Centre) and we're keen to get as many names as possible onto a petition (which is linked below).

If you share my view that not-for-profit Centres that give kids an opportunity to start sailing should be protected, please add your name to the petition.

Thanks

Chris Arnell - Christchurch Sailing Club

Signed.

One of our local schools closed recently and our club provided training for the kids there as part of the RYA OnBoard scheme, which worked really well.

Hope some good comes of the petition.

Just another though, if its an RYA centre then mabe ask them for support. Is'nt that the kind of thing they do?

I did loads of work last year on a similar scheme in my area, also for the council.  The kids always have a fantastic time, get to know that there is more to life than computer games and tv, and get a taste for the great outdoors.  When too many kids are obese, such closures are a step in the wrong direction.

Good luck with it.

Thanks for your signatures & the messages of support.

Please keep them coming. We've today managed to persuade the Council to grant a stay of execution until the end of August (They were going to close the Centre on May 1st) so we're taking bookings for the Summer programme.

What happens next is we've got to come up with a "robust business plan" that allows someone to take over the running of the Centre from September.

We're not out of trouble yet but we won the 1st round. I'll keep you posted as we go along.

So it doesn't look like I'm going to have much time left for sailing the OK this season

Signed.  I have also posted the link on my web-site forum, as it might help visibility. No such thing as bad publicity they say.
