Hello!

I am searching for a keel boat with an overall length
shorter than 4m.
I have already found the illusion and 2.4m R boats. Do
you know more boats that match this criteria?

What would you say comparing illusion and 2.4mR:
What are the main differences?
And which boat will be better for strong winds and severe
offshore conditions? (No worry it would be unmaned)

I am looking forward for your answer!

Thanks!

The Illusion struggles to cope with the sea state in Bembridge Harbour, due to its low free board, at times. It would not cope with anything other that sheltered water IMHO.

No open keelboat will survive "severe offshore conditions". Big breaking wave, swamp, sink.

If there wasn't going to be anyone in it you could fill in the cockpit. I don't think either boat is particularly dry, so some from of automatic bilge pump would probably be required.
Millimeter and Defender 12 were other variations on the theme. I think the main difference is that the 2.4m doesn't have a spinnaker where as the others do.

http://www.miniopen.de/ offer an offshore style boat.

2.4m probably offers the easiest availability.

or if you are planning a round the world trip how about this:

Or if that is too large, how about this:

I can easily imagine dragons sinking in severe conditions...

Would open keelboats with double floor, e.g. Dyas have a chance?

Are you planning to sail her via computer from your bed? Best way of sailing offshore that I can think of!

Lovely boats, Dragons, but plenty have sunk in a good deal less than severe conditions.

I once sailed a Daring that had spent several weeks at the bottom of the Solent before being lifted. A rather spooky feeling.

Any open keelboat is going to sink if it takes a large breaking wave. That's why boats designed to sail offshore have to have the ability to seal the companionway.

Hi,

The thing is do you really want less than 4 meters OA or would you be happy with a boat with overhangs but 4m on the waterline?

If so the Herreshoff 12 1/2 springs to mind. Or the Joel White centre board Haven 12 1/2. Lovely little boats but probably as rare as hens teeth in the UK.
