Not really sailed for 6 months due to injury but I've got the all clear now and had a cracking sail yesterday. It was great to be back in the 12 again (even if I did stick it's on it's nose!) and physically that was fine for me, however I also had a blast in a 300 (great boat) but being non-skiffy I really struggled with upper body strength (er, getting on the board!) and had really weedy grip strength...hands hurt like hell today!
I do a lot of cycling (well as much as I can until the days get longer) so legs and CV should not be a problem, what's the best way to sort the top half out...without the aid of a boring gym!
And for grip, is a PowerBall better or the more traditional springy things that look like pliers with the jaws missing?

I Find the powerball britlliant for forearms, wrists and grip. Its a good warm up tool or good for when the misses is watching eastenders. I never liked the spring things tbh.

I used a powerball for a few months last Winter...
I have a pretty strong grip anyway, but wanted that bit more. However, I stopped using it after my left wrist started to develop stabbing pains when pulling/pushing things at certain angles - my tiller extension being notably painful!

I asked this question of a fitness fanatic friend a few years back, and his answer was that pressups are just about the best thing to do, nice and simple, dont need a gym and will improve upper body strength no end.

If you have an indoor climbing wall nearby then give a bit of bouldering / indoor rock climbing a go.
Its a great sport and really good for improving the upper body and the strength of your grip. More intersting than a gym and it is also great to have a hobby that doesn't rely on the weather!

Climbing is a fantastic way to improve your grip and arm strength and also really enjoyable. 30mins at the wall and you really know about it!
I've just joined the gym as I don't think there is a decent climbing centre down this neck of the woods. Need to get in shape for the upcoming 24 hour bike ride!

My method of improving grip strength and forearm stamina apparently makes you go blind...
But improves CV too!

Push ups will improve your ability to push. Sailing mostly involves pulling. Muscles do very specific things.
I'd agree with the people saying "climbing" as the muscle groups used are pretty similar to those in sailing.

I thought his original question said he had difficulty getting up onto the board? I would have thought push ups would have been helpful here, but I'll stand corrected if I'm wrong.
However climbing is also going to be more fun, with a good personal.

Chin ups...
It must be fitness day allround today, this will be the third fitness thread I've posted on, here's what I told the kitesurfers
earlier today...(they probably love me as much as you lot do )
Originally posted by Grumpf berating the kitesurfers
Run as a warm up.
Then do the exercise cycle, situps, pressups, chin ups, burpees as a recovery in between each. Do as many as you can in a
minute then a minute recovery.
Your target? If you want to live to be old and fit like us windsurfers
50 Sit ups per session X 3 sessions
25 Press ups " "
10 Chin ups
25 Burpees, each times 3 with a minute in between for recovery. Or you could use skipping in between as you get fitter
during the minute off.
Do it 3 times a week and the warm up run before you start sshould be twenty minutes at least.
Ride a mountain bike offroad whenever you can they're always good for stomach and leg muscles and if you push up hills
you go anaerobic, not that you need that for kite surfing but it helps general fitness.
Rowing machines are also ok if a little boring but serve as a good warm up.
And if you've never done any of that stuff before divide the number by 10 to start with, we don't want any of you kite
ladies having a heart attack do we?
And yes I did at your age every week in the off season, now, not quite so often but press ups every day, bike every day and
rowing machine if I feel like it.. I shall probably start back into it in the build up to the clocks going forward.. |

how about a bit of surfing? iv been really getting into my surfing in the last month and noticed my arms and back are much stronger than they used to be. the 300 doesnt have very high sheet loads though.
in my mind the best kind of excercise is doing sport. its more interesting and so you work harder. going to the gym and keeping up the motivation is difficult.

pressups and chinups whilst watching the news/whatever boring documentary parents have on tele in the evening works for me. And windsurfing seems to have done some good as well.

Hi fitness fans. I am doing a bit of research on sailing fitness and have composed a simple anonymous survey that should take less than 5 minutes.
Thank you in anticipation for your participation, even if you don't do anything but sail to keep fit. Assuming I get a good sample of data I will publish the results to you all.

Thanks, Alan

Try using a big elastic band or cycle inner tube as a resistance.
You can hook it around your foot or chair leg while watching the telly. Great for forearms, wrists etc.

In response to survey ID 9489274 (I truely don't know who you are) Yes I will publish a link to the results of the survey back on this thread of Y&Y.
So far in less than 24 hours I have had 100 responses, a good starting point, and some interesting comments. Responses mainly from hiking dinghy sailors and virtually no keel boat sailors (not that surprised given this forums main participants).
Keep the input comming, I will keep the survey open a couple of weeks and then analyse the results.
To save you going back a page, the http://www.sailfun.co.uk/index.php/sailing-survey - link to the survey is here.

Neat, simple survey alan.fuller - Look forward to seeing the results.
TT - Who's Keeley Hazell? - Ah! Just Googled her... It's THAT Keeley! I was shocked to discover that I have the makings of a keelboat sailor. Not good.

You can come over and mix up some sand/cement for me. Shovelling a couple of tons of ballast should sort you out.

Thanks for the results alan.
Interesting to see that 39 sailors dropped out before the end - I guess that they started, but quickly realised that they weren't going to win - Just like a typical race!
