We as a club like many others run Cadet week sailing events whereby members 16+ teach their younger sailors to sail for a week on a week long program.

Not sure if we had a heads up or something that may arise in future but we currently have a policy whereby parents assist and the cadet tutors are informed of Child Protection matters.

Question is - Do clubs enforce "volunteers" to be CRB checked or do you have a club "policy" in place to get round this?

I only got CRB checked once I started to instruct for local schools via the county council.  That's fine - they were paying for it.  Ridiculously I then had to have another CRB check for the Girl Guides because I went along to cook at a week long camp.  Two checks simply because it was two separate organisations.  It didn't affect me, because both organisations paid, and could afford to, but would a sailing club be able to do the same?

When I was working in a voluntary capacity last year we had a policy for the very young children that the parents should be present while the sailing went on - these were aged up to about 11.  This is a good get-round, but some kids are put off by mum and dad being there and also mum and dad can occasionally be a bit of a pain!

I suppose that, since as yet the RYA does not require its instructors to be CRB checked, then it seems a bit heavy handed, and costly, to force it onto volunteers.  Every teaching establishment is supposed to have a Child Protection Policy.  Why not have a talk on this pre-Cadet week, for both tutors and parents, so that everyone is informed and key issues - never be alone with a child with a shut door, don't go into the changing rooms when the kids are in there etc, can be discussed and reinforced?

Get in touch with Jackie Reid at the RYA  mailto:jackie.reid@rya.org.uk - jackie.reid@rya.org.uk her role is to support all the clubs re CP issues

The subject is as minefield of beaurocracy & over the top scare-mongering but Jackie will be able to provide you with the main info on which you can then make your decisions re what to do

Thanks for the information.

CRB's are free for volunteers, so no problem there but do we need to bother with them if parents are supposedly on site.
