hi all, i have had a RS VAREO for the last year now.

Its a nice boat and all but i race agianst lasers,rs200's and phantoms and the vareo just cant keep up Upwind.

So ive decided to sell it.

But i have no idea what to get.

I did have a laser before the vareo and i got bord after a year and a half of sailing it.

So i dont really want a laser.

I wiegh 72kg's and im 6foot 3inchs roughly.

i race on a river which has quite shifty winds. Possible waves when it is wind agianst tide.

I want something as fast if not faster than a laser.

any ideas?

hi jordan, i think that with your weight you would struggle upwind in the vareo, but with your weight and the money you say your have to spend i would buy a 300 i have had both boats.both are very good i found the 300 was just superb to sail upwind it went like a dream and downwind it was great with the wave height you say in other posts of two foot it should not be a problem.just be warned it takes a few months before you trully get the hang of the 300.

Indeed i have Borrowed a friends RS300, But due to have some reasonable rs200 sailors and 1 good phantom sailor i could'nt seem to get the handicap.

The fastest Boat i have to race agianst on handicap is about 1050.

So at a 1000 the rs300 is abit to much

I did think about a Blaze. But have heard they dont piont all that well?

Is this a big problem? Or do they make up with upwind speed?

Ho Jordan,

The Blaze will point very high but will go very slowly.

The technique is to get the bow down, get the boatspeed up and then let the boat lift on the foils. I surprised many a 'stuffer' in my Blaze using this technique.

Cheers,

300 is the only boat that ticks all the boxes, unfortuantely you are facing the perils of handicap racing.  If i were you i would buy a boat i enjoy racing and forget competing with the pot hunting bandits!  Having said that you should be able to give a 200 a run handicap wise in a 300!!

the vareo is not that bad upwind i dont have a problem its all down to geeting the best out of the rig to make it go upwind.personally i dont think the vareo is that slow upwind.i am trying a new mast at the moment for the vareo which has spreaders on it which at an early stage seems to show that the boat is quicker upwind and is now pointing at least 5 degress higher.

I'd go for the RS300, they are just good fun!

I did like the 300 i must admit.

Apart from the fact i had the A rig.

But i found it extremely hard to get far enough ahead because of the handicap.

So i was always getting beating by the phantom, rs200's and the best lasers at my club.

Im seriously considering the blaze, But i'm in two minds what to think about it. Some people like it,some people dont So i dont know what to do.

I find with the Blaze it is a bit of a marmite boat. You will either love it or hate it. I strongly advise that you get a go in one before you fork out the cash.

It does look a bit intimidating the first time you launch with the racks fully out  but once you get over how wide the thing is it is a great boat.

indeed.

Looks a nice boat.

Im just worried about upwind speed.

i want a boat that has good upwind speed, pionting ability has got to be better than the vareo!!!

As i say i race agianst 1 good phantom, rs200's.

So i do need something that has a standing chance agianst them.

Just remember that pointing and good upwind speed do not necessarily go hand in hand.

I always found in the Blaze that i could easily beat Lasers upwind and whilst I could not point as high the lift effect i got from the foils more than compensated for this. Plus in a blow you can just sit there and chill out whilst they all grimace and struggle whilst you plane past (upwind).

As I have already said the only thing a Blaze does not like it lots of tacking. Give it a bit of space to stretch it's legs and you will leave Lasers for dead and harass tha Phantoms all the way round.
