Rs 200, ideal weight 20+ stone, good racing circuit, not too demasnding, but still fast. Or you could try syms, loads of choice there: scorp, fireball etc.

RS800 - loverly boat but not your first asymmetric - you'd get blown off the water and its not cheap either.  A 4000 might be the answer, you're a bit light, so it depends where you sail, they are cheap to buy but new sails cost a bomb - no on second thoughts you might not have enough weight to right it, and you'll be doing plenty of that. What about a Buz?

i sail at bough beech and there are about five 4000 so that would be a good bet a buzz wont be any good cos i will be the only one there.

I sail at Bough Beech too.  You've just earn't a sail in my 4000.  Catch me by 4398!

If it comes down to a choice between the 4000 and the 29er I would have to say the 29er.  The loads are lighter and there is the youth circuit there if you want.  To be honest though a 200 may suit the two of you better.  The problem is the gap in your ages, it means if one of you wants to do the youth thing you will have to split in a couple of years when you hit 18.  I'm on the B14 stand at the dinghy show all weekend, come and say hi.

You haven't said anything about your joint sailing ability, how much learning you're prepared to do, what sails at your club or budget.

I would suggest you also look at the 405 (now defunctI would guess but you might get a second hand one cheap) and might not meet your requirements or a Cherub...

well me and my brother work quite well togther,  he has his rya junior leval 3 and i am a instructor.  i was thinking about spending 5000 pounds on a boat!  the cherub sounds good but i would strugle with some of the work that you have to do on a cherub to make it competative.

You sound like you are at the same stage as my brother and I, a few years back. We grew out of the Mirror, so got the RS200. We were slightly lighter that you at 15 stone, so struggled for a couple of seasons. As it is a boat to grow into, don't dishearten. Stick with it or get your brother he eat loads of pies.

Hey now that a boat I can endorse. Amasing boat, not too much not too little. Even I can handle its kite, just dont keep the jib on too much.

K from last time i was looking this up. Julian said this on 49er forum:

My definition of a skiff is a boat that un-sticks!

What that means, again in my sense of the word, is that it freely planes upwind, ok, going further, its a boat that can acheive a level of windward planning so that it becomes more of a tactical tool during a race, rather than something you do for kicks of teh race track.

And downwind, its a boat thats has enough sail area that it pays to tack downwind in just about anything and that and again seriously un-sticks and sails faster than the wind.

Hope thats general enough.

Julian's definition of a "skiff" would exclude many of the traditional working boats in Aus that actually originated the term. There really doesn't seem to be a satisfactory definition of "skiff", although in general we could mostly agree whether a boat is or is not a skiff. It has become a marketing term.

Yeah the original def of skiff was just an open boat, one with no decks and or tanks i think. there was something on the 49er thread about that but i thought this was the most relivent post.

No one actualy knows the real definition of skiff I asked on the Musto Skiff stand at show and only one out of three had anyidea and he directed me to 49er forum

this is from knightmare!!!

i sail at kielder water sailing club in the north east. i dabble in iso sailing every now and again but my crew is leaving to uni so having him as 29er crew would be quite difficult. at the moment i sail a radial but i really do want to change.

kielder is actually having an asymetric open meeting on the 30th april 1/2nd of may if any one wants to come.

Are you going to Southsheilds the week after, because it looks like its going to be a big one. We're running a Scottish Skiff Racing event there, lots of 49ers look ready to turn out plus all the skiffs from the Northern area, on top of the original Southsheilds attendance. We're hoping to get down if I can get the time off work.
