Subject: Teach A Dog To Sail

Over the last few years i've seen more and more dogs on the water, from on yachts to R.I.B's and even 1 that rides on a jet-ski, my uncle who is an avid windsurfer manged to teach his dog sam on the balance bit and still can manage a force 5 10 years on.

However how much sailing i do though i've never seen a dog on a dinghy (apart from a Devon Yawl).

I'm tempted to try but i don't think loopy springer spaniels go well with laser EPS, and i don't want do scrath the gelcoat on the Vibe.

Has anyone out there tried it?

Norman the dog, having spent the day on the rib with Helen Rollinson ..... joined Rod on his Prowler for the sail home getting his first taste of foiling and clearly feeling very at home on a Moth!

I like it but would it work with a bigger dog leaping from 1 side to the other?

Looking at it i may give it a go but i think i'll wait until it's warmer cause i've got a feeling i'll get very wet!

i wouldn't even try it unless it was a stable boat and not windy, i don't fancy being out at sea/middle of a lake with a capsized boat AND a dog in the water...

also a EPS only just has enough room to get a human under the boom in tacks and gybes.

btw since when did a vibe have gelcoat?

Since i put one on, it's so slow and terrible we put sport 14 sails and rudder, gelcoat, xenon centreboard, 600 narow wings and a gennaker off a 29er.

lots of things break but if you get it going (and upright) it'll  keep up with a 400!

We sail in brightlingsea and know loads of the boat builders there it was just a matter of one of them owing me a favour.

P.S Give me a month or two for pictures, we don't get it out of storage until april and i haven't got any as we've only sailed it 3 times last year as testing.

My dog will swim out to my boat as I'm coming ashore.  I then scoop him up (he's a jack russell) and plonk him in the cockpit.

Haven't taught him to use the trapeze yet though.

the same, but different...

surely the gelcoat will just crack off if you take the boat out in any sort of chop due to the flexing of the hull. do you mean a spray job? i also fail to see how gelcoat will make the boat any faster with the extra weight probably offsetting and smoothness gained on the hull.

I don't mean gelcoat do i,

It's the light weight coat stuff thats really smooth and helps the water flow around the hull.
