At the risk of being barred from from this forum, I've always said Phantoms were handicap bandits... Or is that handicap bandits are alwayw Phantoms?!?!?!

Phantoms are obviously a good class for light wind racing with the right crew weight, that sail well in cold weather!
Or the competition wasn't there this year!
How many entered the race?

Watching the forecast I was thinking of opening a book for a N12 or Phantom. Perfet for them ... here's hoping for a bit more breeze next year and come hell or high water I'll be there
How close was the finish?

Sorry I wasn't having a go at the Phantoms they are a good boat with many good sailors in the class but does the handiicap reflect this??

I suspect its the first time a Phantom has done at all well at the BM... From the numbers I have this is the first time one has finished in the top 30 since at least 2002.

It was foggy, and freezing!! To wards the end our kite blocks had frozen into ice cubes!!! My mate had major problems with his canoe !!! I am a bit peeved off as we were told to launch from the other side of the land fingure, it took ages to get round and as a consequence missed our start! it was so foggy that it was disorientating and Chan i asked a rescue boat which way the start was, they said sorry we are not allowed to help!!! I started about 30 secs before the 400's so was fighting a loosing battle from the off! Still i enjoyed it and so did my wife, could of done with it being warmer and a tad more wind!!

I sail with a GPS watch - If they give a Lat/Long for the start line - do youy think that mayh have helped???
On the other hand maybe launching earlier and following may have got you to the start line!!!
Sorry being a bit facitious....

Well i was on the water as soon as i could and a little under 30 mins before the start!!! And you could not see anyone to follow because of the fog!! And no the Long/Lat for the start wouldnt of helped but the Moron in the rescue boat giving me some kind of clue would of!!!

Phantom wins Bloody Mary
Freezing fog greeted competitors at this year's Bloody Mary, with poor visibility right up to the first warning signal. Many commented that the conditions were 'evil' and many boats had frozen sheets to contend with as well as frozen crews! Racing got underwat in light airs and the eventual winner was Andy Couch from Blythfield SC in a Phantom. Second and third places went to National 12s with Thorpe Bay YC's Kevin Isles and Jane Wade taking the runner-up spot ahead of Tony Stewart and Elizabeth Ross from Northampton.
Class 'B' for Queen Mary handicap boats was won by Daniel Holman in his Punk dinghy, while Class 'C' for foiling boats, was won by the International Moth of Holowell SC's Gary Ireson. |

Jon how about you stop commenting on situations you have no idea about, and get off your arse and go sailing! The facts are i have been sailing for over 20 years, i have competed in hugely different conditions and at a variety of levels and classes, I have however never raced in the bloody Mary until today, the conditions were horrible with freezing fog etc. I was told to launch by the Marshall's from a different part of the horseshoe, i had not sailed on Queen Mary before to realise how big the peninsula was, neither was it easy to predict the wind speed on the lake, due to a lack of visibility. A GPSS position on a lake is ridiculous and yes i found the start line in the end obviously unfortunately i was very, very late, i could not of physically prepared for the race anymore, in hindsight i would have told the Marshall's i was launching where everyone else was and that would have saved me the time to get to the start line. My only groan was that idiots in the rescue boat not helping me out with an angle!!

Thanks Merlinboy, Well said.

As a newbie (Ok registered ages ago but posting all in one day) it is a real pain to have people answer after every writeup.
The idea is you read and contribute informative information not waffle on just to raise your post count.

I think that the class rules will tell you if and when you can use them at CLASS events, but at an event such as the BM, class rules are overriden by anything the the events Sailing Instructions.
If your class let you have a GPS, but the SI's say you can't have one .. the SI's will win. If they don't mention it and your class allows them, check with the RO .. It could be they are adding an amendment, or they just don't care.
RE the BM ... It was cold. Thats all I have to say. (And I didn't even go on the water!!)

Not so. In handicap events your boat must comply with class rules unless there is a specific item in the SIs. If you don't want to comply with class rules you need to tell the organisers that you are *not* racing a whatever class boat it is but a one off boat which is similar to the xxx class, and ask them to allocate you a new handicap.
On the subject of the results, what on earth is a "Punk"? I know the "Halo" is a modified Blaze, but the other I've never heard of.

If im correct it is a single handed dinghy which dan holman designed and I helped build last year (built at Synthesise Yachts and Design). At the time we built it he didnt have a name for it, but I guess you could compare it to a laser, however is a bit longer and made out of carbon, with a very nice seamless hull joiint. Hull weight of just over 40kg's

glad I didnt go, I much prefered my windsurfing in cold (but not freezing) and windy conditions. Anyone who actually sailed must have been slightly mad. Well done to anyone who worked up the enthusiasm to sail on a freezing puddle without any wind.

And this probably sums up the weather - foggy!

I do remember the Mirror Eastern event back in April last year, that was on the River, so easier to loose boats!

I sailed in a freezing fog the last race of the season. It wasn't funny. Although the wind improved greatly as the visibility reduced. I was okay for grip but the chaps in the GP had trouble when their dancefloor froze...
