I think the Preadator headcams are probably the best for quality. Here is a youtube link http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eWGzRWKgjMM . We tested one on the 12ft skiff and it was great!

predators are bloody expensive though!

if you want cheap and cheerful get the Oregon Scientific
ATC3K action camera. its small, waterproof and can
record up to 2 hours at a time on a 4gb memory card. the
sound isnt very good (theres lots of noise) but all your
really going to hear in a boat is the shshshshhhhing of
water and the helm shouting at the crew and vice versa.

BARGAIN at only £99

ive looked at that one but i think it records less frames per second meaning it wont capture as well and will be more blurry

Quality vs. price, I'm afraid. The expensive ones are far better!

The ATC2K or 3K are the best on price - they do the job. Remember that YouTube lowers the quality of footage posted on there anyway.

It's also worth thinking about the quality of the footage that you are after: A cam strapped to a boom/deck/your head never gives you the footage that you hope for!

Maybe two of the ATC3Ks? One on the deck, one on your head? Should be adequate for training purposes... And you've still got one spare camera for when the other one inevitably goes down to Davy Jones' Locker.

It's good and light, but you need to buy extra cards for it.

Eaxcatly I thought for £160 it's not a massive amount to pay.

The gadget show had a couple on recently that were £499 and £999 - which is getting a bit silly cost-wise..

does it make a good head cam?

I use the ATC3K & find it good for the use that I have for it which is as a training aid to film myself in the boat to find out how I do things & how to improve.

I made a bracket to sit the camera attachment to & prefect for filming in the cock pit of the boat.As to weather it will be good as a head cam I think that it would be heavy after an hour or so.

bit sad posting drunkenly on a forum isn't it?

*back on topic*

a guy at our club has a camera(not sure what) but it gives fairly good footage, the positioning of the camera is almost as important as the quality, he made a little frame for it to go on the rudder/transom,gaffa taped it to a helmet and wore that and has had it tied into the middle of the boat from the mast. All gave a difference angle obviously and were better for different things
