ive been involved in sailing for as long as i can remember but have never properly learned - weird i know. my father was bnational champoin ages ago and i have allways been interested in it. have bought a boat recently (topper byte) but im not a fan of sailing schools dunno why. so i wana crew for sum1 and learn but the standards are so high they all want like pro crews regarless if they race or not also you never really hear for people needing crew any more.
what has happened???

You will need some experience before people will trust you to crew their boats so get your face known at your club and then people are more likely to ask you to crew for them .................I get asked a lot by annoyed Helm's wishing their crew was more reliable

or even better do what i did and make friends with someone in the bar

someone who you can get on with is most important, the next thing is you have to be able to read eachother, the best crews do not need to call tacks etc they just know what the other is thinking and can go instantly, boat handling and setup is just a matter of practice built on the crewing relationship.
------------- FLAT IS FAST!
Shifts Happen
|
Posted By: KnightMare
Date Posted: 09 Mar 05 at 9:50pm
yeah you need to understand oneanother, the not needing to call tacks comes with parctice. But if they understand you and why you do/say thngs then its good.
also i find that they need to be willing to work hard, and have good concentration. If you are both willing to work hard, train hard, and both have a decent understanding of what needs to happen in the boat then you will go far.

Lancing's on the West Sussex coast, half-way between Worthing and Shoreham. It's a small, friendly club, with very active fleets of Lasers (and Radials, 4.7, 4000 and L>>), Toppers, Contenders. We've got a few others too: Buzz, Streakers, 29ers, etc. If you're in the area, come and have a look!

As I remember King George was closed so that Thames Water (or A.N.Other)could drain it and make repairs to the leaks as it was losing loads of water!
It was supposed to be open for the 2004 season, but when we last checked it was still shut. Shame really, it is by far our nearest club & they were very very nice to us when we wanted to join (unlike another club just outside the M25 that will remain nameless).

Um, well we've been winter members at Datchet, which was great until the Saturday of the Dinghy Show when someone turned up at our house and took our boat away . It had only been on the market for two days, so we were a bit surprised!
We are waiting for RMW to build the new one, but it is taking a bit longer than expected, so we aren't sailing anywhere at the moment.

------------- International 14 1503
|
Posted By: Lucy Lee

The one we are getting has been designed by Phil Morrison & is being built by RMW. There are hull lines for both on the Cherub webite http://www.sailingsource.com/cherub - www.sailingsource.com/cherub (hit 'more' at the bottom of the news section on the front page). The one on the stand with tube wings was designed by Granite, built by him & DL Boats http://dlboats.co.uk/ - http://dlboats.co.uk/ and had an RMW rig, so a lot of the things like shroud base, pole length etc will be the same.
I'll let you know when it arrives, you are welcome to come for a spin if you fancy it.

I gained from King George' closing because my Contender came from there. It's previous owner decided the pathetic pond he was forced to sail at had too much greenery around it for comfortable Contendering.
Apparently when they drained it the engineers when a bit pale and suggested it might be closed 'for some time'.... images of my sons Playmobil boats in the bath swirling arround the plug hole
