Anyone else from here going? My first time*, and first time I'll have been to Hayling Island. Any tips or advice? Forecast seems to be varying a lot, but hopefully there's going to be at least one full-on day

Im going, the forecast is rapidly decreasing though, I would rather it stayed above 15knots! Im also looking forward to a crash course in sailing at hayling, I have never sailed in a strong tidal venue! ------------- Neil

make sure you know which way the tide is running across the course, one side of the beat will be favoured. Upwind is a drag race out to this side, downwind, is a demolition derby, keep your nose clean and you'll be up the front. And watch out for the gates downwind. They will go through the rules for these at the briefing, make sure you understand them and get them right, mistakes will be costly both in terms of places and insurance premiums!! But whaever you do have fun on saturday night, its what the whole event is about! ------------- FLAT IS FAST! Shifts Happen |

was planning on going this year sadly i cant as i shall be spending my weekend team racing Toppers at a NSSA event. Did anyone sail on the sunday. We had to leave early. Saturday was awesome, 3 sails and 37 knots of breeze is a very good thing!!  ------------- FLAT IS FAST! Shifts Happen |

All fleets got racing on the Sunday bar the 29ers. Came seventh in the B14 fleet...
...less said about how many boats were actually racing, the better As forecast, the wind did die off quite a lot, below fully-hiking conditions. Last couple of races got a bit lumpy, the wind (as forecast) swung round to the North and filled in, so there was wind-blown chop running against swell from the sea and against the tide that was still coming in. We were doing OK races 3 &4 until we had to gybe for the bottom gate. Swimming, mast in mud, more than five minutes behind the leaders.

It was really annoying in race 3, as although we'd got to the top in last, spotting that it was a two-sail reach to the gate meant we didn't waste time hoisting and dropping the kite.Posted By: Guest

I heard that there was quite a bit of carnage in the 29er & 800 fleets with rigs and daggerboards biting the dust ... any details/reports yet? ------------- |

29ers were also racing on Sunday (course nearest to the club after the moths I think). Multiple 29er rigs broken on Saturday, also a lot of damage in the 800s racing on the Winner (the only fleet to try and race there before they moved that course further into the harbour). Watching them from the club there was very little water over the bank, and a lot of v nasty chop. At one point at least 3 boats stacked up on the sand bar in waist deep water, again several busted rigs and at least one exploded dagger board. All in all a great effort by the club to get through the amount races they did in pretty testing conditions! I imagine Noble are having quite a busy day today though. |

OUCH! Strong wind, shallow water and high performance dagger board boats dont mix! (speaking from experience as someone who has broken bowsprits on 18'Skiff, RS800 & I14 on the sea bed after grounding / nose diving!) Was the shallow water within the course? ------------- |

Think the shallow area was to one side, it was a bit hard to tell from the shore exactly what was where. All credit to the race team for the job they did over the weekend, but I think their one major mistake was trying to run the races on the Winner in the conditions. One 800 bust their bowsprit on the sunday, though that was just tube failure rather than hitting the bottom. He said it's not the first he's had go since he got the new version of the boat. |

i was in the 29er fleet and 6 top sections broke and a mast was ruined... personally .. my top section exploded best fun of my life ------------- 49er 884 |

On Saturday, the 800's were racing just off of Winner, I would estimate it to be about 10 feet off . However, you could quite clearly see the breaking waves on the bank - although this didn't deter people from launching off the beach and sailing straight over it. Crowd pleasing yes, but I imagine not for the sailors. |
