Anyone got any good advice to pass on regarding their construction and/or use?

I am about to install them (I think) and am a little anxious....

What is a tacking stick? Is it a tiller extension?

Nah, they're rubber tubing about 80cms long placed above the trap hook in place of the handle. Søren Andreasen makes wonders out of them and tacks quicker than the eye can see (yeah, just...). Other less experienced sailors find them difficult to adapt to.

Contender443 had a set on one of his boats but took them off after a few swims.

Oh you mean dongles! We use those too, although sometimes the carbon
can be a little slippery they are great.

I may yet do the same....(or even be in the same boat, quite literally) as Mark...

here's how the expert does it:

That really is a low boom!

Too low - I was amazed at some of the techniques used by our continental friends at my one championship in the class.  One German guy rolled on his back under the boom every time.  Never seen anything like it before or since.

Lovely boat upwind in a blow but.....

Or possibly the ready rings made by ian renilson? They are well suited to mustos.

I love the dongles on the 12!! Work so well - wish I had them on the 49er, would have been so much easier than waiting for the lazy crew to hook you on!!! ;-)

Gona put them on my new 12 too!!

Most 49er helms don't use them, but one or two do (the danish for example).  Sure you save a bit of time, but most have kust learnt to hook themselves on with their tiller hand.

they may not have problems, but they still take longer to get yourself sorted.  Ok, in boats other than the 49er the crew can take an extra second to clip on, but when you have the mainsheet you haven't got much time to get ready.
