I live on one of the roads leading to the Weymouth and Porland Sailing Academy. There are plans afoot to modify a junction near my house to ease access (Sunseeker have a bit of trouble getting their large loads around it) but I was informed that the work needs to be completed by 2010 as there is a sailing event at WPNSA that is expected to be even larger than the 2012 Olympics?????

Is there one?

In this context they probably mean bigger as in more people present, and yes, there are quite a few. The actual games is really a small fleets regatta, and as I remember sailing is limited to 400 competitors (maybe 360). I think this years Oppie Nationals had over 440 competitors and I bet the number of Oppie parents vastly exceeds the number of coaches and other support staff at the games...

I reckon there's a bit of "lets use the sailing to fast track our plans" going on at the moment.

This weeks Sail for Gold regatta has already made the site look a bit small. The lasers and the radials are setting up in the carpark and the new 300 space overflow car park was full last night. You wouldn't say there was a massive increase in traffic though.

The olympics might be big in terms of exposure and coverage but for sheer size I would say events like Kiel Week and the Princess Sofia Trophy could easily exceed it in terms of numbers of competitors because they are 'open' events whereas the Olympics is limited to 1 boat per country.....

The Laser Worlds are arriving in early August 2010, with about 150
competitors, but the Laser Masters Worlds, which follow on, will probably be
limited to about 350.

At a guess they mean Sail for Gold

‘As of next year, all eyes will be on Weymouth and Portland, the venue for the 2012 Olympics, as it becomes part of the newly introduced ISAF Sailing World Cup Series.’

I doubt it being in Kiel but it was a response to the 'are there any bigger events that the Olympics?'.

The Olympics is limited to something like 300 athletes in total.
