I know a couple of guys what have built them. One did a self drainer the other did a conventional hull.

They both looked great but sadly were a few kilos overweight (very hard to build a wooden one that last down to weight I am told).

Good luck with it though. I dont imagine that for club racing a hull that is a few kilos heavy should make a difference.

First thing to do would be to contact the Phantom CA (www.phantomclass.org.uk) to get some plans. They are a very helpful bunch and will tell you everything you need to know.

thanks guys, i checked the site and looks like you have to call a guy in lowestoft i think! you say a few kg overweight, are there strict rules as to this,or is this only for racing/registering as it would be more for my own fun than anything

and what is the score on a sail number or is this again for race/reg purposes

as you may tell i am new to dinghy sailing

I rebuilt one a few years back using West System. Was stronger than the original build!

Might be a better way to do it- buy a rotten one and re-skin it!

I did think of that, and nearly did,but by the time she replied she had already sold it.

I have seen a couple of ospreys, another boat that interests me, up for grabs and in need of my help! a boat i think looks great in wood

it would be a great feeling to build and then sail, but i would like to get a boat on the water sooner rather than later

It may sound silly but have you sailed one before? I wouldn't recomend you making one and not have tested one because you may not even like them.

For first boats I usually recommend folk buy a pro built shell and do all the decks and interior. That way you know that you'll end up with a boat that's fair and measures, but still have the joy of doing so much of the work yourself. A foam sandwich shell and then interior in whatever ought to be a decent boat... There is, as you might expect, shed loads of boat building instructions, suggestions and the rest of it material on the Cherub website. Its worth reading even if you don't plan building a Cherub. http://www.sailingsource.com/cherub/test/doku.php/tech/howto - Start here!

Cheers guys,

Your right I haven't sailed one before! But I am sailing at the moment and would like my own boat, yet most of my sailing has been done at sea on bigger boats, i like the idea and would like the experience of sailing smaller boats.

I am a painter/wood finisher by trade and a keen carpenter and like the idea of being able to sail alone, as most of my friends have children and dont have time to sail with me and i'm looking for a winter project.

jonster, I have reluctantly decided to sell my phantom K88.  As you might guess from the sail number the boat is probably the oldest phantom in the country, but she is still sound and has been sailed a lot this summer.  What she needs is stripping down (again) repainting and having the decks done with epoxy rather than just varnish, some new fittings putting in and the foils refurbishing.  The mast and boom are not ideal but will do, and the sail is good (nowhere near as old as the boat itself)

I have just bought a vintage i14 and so do not have time or garage space for both boats.  Plus I also sail a contender...

It strikes me that such a refurbishment might be an ideal winter project for someone with the right skills to transform a very nice dinghy with lots of potential.  If you look on the phantom site you will see there is already an active classic side to the phantom fleet.

I don't want a lot of money for the boat and I really don't want to have to put her on ebay.  If you might be interested send me a PM.

Nessa
