I could probably sail something bigger than the feva however my helm is not prahaps well built enough to controll a larger vessle.

what sort of boat would i be going into?
i know that the 29er or RS 500 would be the most likley candidate butim not sure if the two of us are big enough. our combined weight is 110KG

have about 7 days worth of trpeze experience sailing things from 29er too RS 800!!

maby the laser 4000, like the idea of adjustable racks to work with crew size and weight but at 8grand?
please im only working on pocket money

110kg will get you going well enough in the 29er

The girls that won silver fleet at the nationals weigh in at a measly 105kg, ok they struggled a little when it was breezy but you can still be very fast with the right technique! We are getting too heavy at 135kg, its great when its really windy but awful in marginal conditions! Id say 120-5 is perfect

L3000 or V3000? buzz/iso/things? I know nothing about the weight range, just off the top of my head.  What else is sailed at your club?

Yes, but if he's worried that the helm is not yet well built enough for a 29er then the 4 Tonner is not a wise choice!

Which club do you belong to?

Are there any particular classes that are more popular than others.  You might find it better to take a compromise in terms of the boat in return for more class racing.

Depends if you want to continue down the RYA route or not.  If yes, then go for the 29er.  If no, I would probably go with the RS500.  Lots of training, 'yoofs' sail them and generally a really nice boat to trapeze off.  However, also look at the V3000/L3000, Buzz, but avoid the Vago.

RS200? or do you want to have at least one trapeze? i've sailed one with a combine weight of 115-125kgs and cope with it in most wind conditions, also the circuit is very competitive and has a very large amount of youth sailors, has youth training events organized as well at points in the year.

29er, agree with Neil, you are the lower end of the weight range for one, but if the technique is there, you can mix it with the heavier people as the wind picks up, plus it's backed by the RYA

V/L3000, quite like the 29er without the RYA bit, more stable and slightly slower

L4000, i hope you are joking!

best bet is probably a 29er

well if i went on the most popular choise id be in oppies and toppers

were the only 2 hander at our club

i sailed the 29er in very light conditions, didnt even get on the trapise.
unfortunatley i dont think theres enough water (both depth and roaming room) for the 29er unless i tack every 30 seconds from one end of the river to the next.

even in the feva i run aground on the sand

i liked the RS 500 alot, has a higher handicap than the 29er so maby its easier to sail and i may get away with one of these.

also sailed the 800 but thats way out of our leage
still was a fun boat to take out

also the laser VAGO but seemed to general purpose than speed deamon

id love the 29er because its a chalenge (tippy!) but alas i doubt i could sail it as freely as the feva baecause on 2 sides of the estuary there are 2 sand banks.

id probably have to go out to sea a long way to have room but then id be without saftey as theyd be in with the toppers.

i could just take a VHF and call the rib over every time we capsisised but dont think that would be ideal

im off to southhampton boat show so i hope the ovington guys will be there and can give me the lo down.
id also give them a run for their money by giving RS and maby topper and Laser a pitch

what are they like second hand and resale value? im on pocket money

the 29er is a great learning boat as it can be forgiving but teachs you not to makle the same mistake twice....

i was recently in the same dilema as you..

pm if yu feel like it

If it's that restricted I think you might be aiming a bit too high with a 29er, and if you run aground in a fast boat with a daggerboard you'll cause some real damage.

This might be the reason there are no doublehanders on your stretch of water but if you do want to go down that route you might be better with something designed for restricted water like an RS200 (kite can be goosewinged rather than having to sail angles), RS400 (pole can be pulled to windward to run deep) or maybe something more traditional like a Merlin?

If you're on a restricted water, maybe the 200?  If you get one with the old single patch system you will make yourself a huge saving.  Personally, I didn't find there was a huge difference between the two, but when you have more shiny coins you can always upgrade.  Also it has a centreboard, so if you do hit the bottom you shouldn't do too much damage.  At 115kg, you should be fine, sailing the 200 at 95kg however, was very wet.

You're within weight range for a 3000 (past Nationals winners have been 110kg). Fast, easy fun.

Buy this one and come to Rutland for the Nats this weekend!:

So lets see...
Lightish crew weight
Narrow river
Need to be competitive on handicap

That says National 12 to me!
Your location doesn't really sound kite friendly from where I'm sitting...

yea its about as kite friendly as a hornets nest
