I have updated the map that shows sailing clubs - available from http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/community/generic_map.asp - CLUBS on the menu (top left).

Any problems, please let me know! Hopefully it all works nicely...

I think the previous option was a bit clearer.

Brilliant!

I hadn't realised just how hard it is to get to a club from where we live - at a stretch I can just see 4 clubs on the screen on the first resolution that clubs are visible. that is in an area of about 100 miles by 150.

And using the link I see someone has entered some excellent photos which I never knew about... off to do more investigating

I have looked at the clubs in my area. I notice Shoreham and Brighton SC are no where near the sea an in fact they are not near any water!!

I guess they have given you incorrect info.

I noticed that with the Royal Burnham YC, but when I searched for it using the name, it pinpointed it to the right location.

We position the clubs using the postcode first...often that is highly accurate, but some postcodes span larger areas, and thats where Mark (our Editor) went and manually tweaked loads of the markers.

Apologies if we have got it wildly wrong. And of course we didnt know the address of some clubs, so they don't appear on the map at all (yet). Its amazing how many of the club's own websites dont have a postal address or map of any sort!

In terms of finding clubs, the old system was probebly easier for a ludite, but this map is more fun.

Danger of using postcodes is that unless club has a manned office you will usually get the secretarys home postcode or in the case of our club a po box in the middle of town ,

will lat and longs help with updates as I'm sure there will be many

56 00'38.16" N   4 45'40.79" W

Helensburgh Sailing Club

Good idea though

Just a bit o tuning needed.

I really must extend the coverage - we've got Northern Ireland at the moment...need to go south and fill in the rest!

If you're in the know - pass it on.

Great work!!

Few amends...

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&saddr=&daddr=51.294123,-0.510929&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=17&sll=51.293452,-0.510103&sspn=0.004898,0.013947&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17 - Papercourt - needs to go a smidge NE

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&saddr=&daddr=51.428534,-1.063914&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=18&sll=51.428792,-1.065266&sspn=0.002442,0.006974&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=18 - Burghfield a tad SE to 51.428534, -1.063914

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&saddr=&daddr=51.396354,-0.475545&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=17&sll=51.396317,-0.475955&sspn=0.004887,0.013947&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17 - Littleton need to move 1 mile or so west to 51.396354, -0.475545

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&saddr=&daddr=50.867247,-1.779742&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=17&sll=50.867315,-1.779603&sspn=0.004943,0.013947&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17 - Spinnaker needs to move a smidge to 50.867247, -1.779742

you probably need to add http://www.mudefordsc.org/ - Mudeford

not sure how you got the http://www.rorcrating.com/ - RORC rating office in New Milton when it's basically on the front in lymington as per postcode

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&saddr=&daddr=50.804097,-0.827563&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=18&sll=50.804114,-0.82693&sspn=0.002475,0.006974&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=18 - Chichester YC is at 50.804097, -0.827563 and Dell Quay is a long way out, but I can't position it well enough myself - it looks like it might be at 50.820926, -0.814244 but I'm not totally sure..

http://www.thamessailingclub.co.uk/ - Thames SC is at 51.397122, -0.311767

London Corinthian SC is at 51.490573, -0.238804

Tamesis is spot on, there is another club next door which is called http://www.arielsailing.com - Ariel Sailing Club and they definately win the spot prize for most visitor un-friendly website. Check it out - possibly the least friendly sailing club website in the world.

Merlimags

Any chance of making the map bigger on this site and adding in the "link to this page" feature, as that would help the tidying up of the location data?

Otherwise you find a club 'out of position' on your map and then have to go to full google maps to find the correct lat/long.

Still love it - now we just need an option to "export as a TOMTOM POI file" - perfecto for those open meeting bandits..

Crikey. Why the hell would you do that with your website? I know of some clubs that have a members-only area, or even a members only site linked off the main one, but to completely hide all information about yourself is discouraging in the extreme. Are they one of those clubs that you need to know the right people before you can even be considred for membership? My spider sense picks up the distinct signals of blue blazers...

Ariel is the BBC's sailing club and I believe that you have to work for the corporation to be a member, hence all the "secret squirrel" stuff.

Why not at least have a public site explaining that? Are the BBC ashamed of having a sailing club or something?

That might explain it, but still it wouldn't be that hard to have a few lines on the homepage... I wonder if they ever run an open meeting...

Naseby SC has been closed for about 5 years, see the empty dinghy park!

Hollowell SC, the marker is on the building site next door and not on the club.

Royal Findhorn YC, the marker is on the holiday cottages next to the club

Right, I've now completed another round of updates.

Thankyou SO MUCH to the people who have helped out with corrections. We really appreciate it.

Can I make a plea once more if there are any Irish sailing club members out there, to get in touch?

 "Members Only" open meeting...

Seriously, if this has anything to do with a big corporation like the BBC, they could find someone to design the home page a bit better. Not even hosted on the BBC servers...

Few more amends

Royal Torbay YC -  50°27'29.45"N       3°31'25.09"W

Bough Beech -  51°12'31.39"N         0° 8'32.51"E

Pevensey Bay -  50°48'6.59"N        0°20'25.20"E

Emsworth SC -  50°50'32.14"N        0°56'23.23"W

Emsworth Slipper SC -  50°50'39.80"N     0°56'16.76"W   (not 100% certain on that one but it's more there then where it is currently..)

Datchet Water SC  -  51°29'8.56"N     0°32'12.93"W  (surprised that one wasn't right)

Wraysbury Lake -   51°27'42.83"N      0°33'25.37"W

Weir Wood -  51° 5'51.22"N       0° 0'29.21"E

Bough Beech -   51°12'31.42"N      0° 8'32.51"E

Castle Cove SC -  50°35'35.39"N       2°27'53.29"W

Amazing how out of date the coverage of WPNSA is on google earth..ok so there's a lot of development been going on but that aerial shot looks 2-3 years old.

And staying in that general neck of the woods I think the Royal Dorset YC is wrong..iirc it's much more in town on the quayside along from Rendezvous..but I could be mistaken...
