Im a 17 year old, male, weighing 11 stone wondering what dinghy i should next get i have experience in both single-handers and double-handers with basic trapeze experience. Does any one have any advice? i am looking for something that will challenge me and that will give exciting sailing. ------------- M.Gough |

there are loadsof different classes i would recoomend but first you need to answera few questions to help us narrow it down, budget? do you want singlehanded or doublehanded? trapeze or not? for singlehanded hiker, at your weight i would say rs300 but i am slightly biased ------------- Landlocked in Africa RS300 - 410 Firefly F517 - Nutshell Micro Magic RC yacht - Eclipse |

i hav a budget up to about £2000 at the very most preferably it would be a single-hander as i dont have a reliable crew but i would be willing to consider double-handers as for trapeze i have no preferance but i have done very minimal trapeze work i am sailing on coastal waters ------------- M.Gough |

An RS 600 would come within the price range, they are a singlehanded trapeeze boat. If not a Laser is another hiking option. A good way to start out gaining more sailing experience. Edit - cos Matty kept answering my questions I posted!!! ------------- |

you might get an older 600 for that but not a 300 or 700, for an exciting singlehander, contender has a trapeze and can be picked up cheaply but you might be too light for it (?). if its inland and light winds then mabe an older phantom if you primarily want it as a blasting toy. depending on experience you might look at an international canoe, very challenging but looks great fun. ------------- Landlocked in Africa RS300 - 410 Firefly F517 - Nutshell Micro Magic RC yacht - Eclipse |

Cue the rest of the forum, advising poor matty.g to buy all sorts... then he's going to be advised to get a crew and buy a Cherub. Finally, sensible people like Scoob or JimC will suggest him to go to his local club, see what's there, perhaps get on a couple of trial sails and choose what he likes. We should have a template reply stored on the forum somewhere

That's the key thing really, if you're not sure what you like take advantage of all the people who are keen to promote their own favourite and get a ride in one...
You really don't say enough there to make much of a call... After all boats are exciting for a given value of exciting! There's a band that runs between boring to exciting to terrifying I guess which is different for every person, every wind and wave conditions etc etc And the venue makes so much difference. If your coastal venue is going to run to big waves and surf every week then a Laser qualifies as exciting for most folk... If it tends to lighter winds and sheletered flat water then maybe not. But hey, it doesn't matter that much. You're not getting married! If you don't like the boat you can always sell it and get another - at least provided its not a class that you'll have great difficulty selling again... |
