Adblock on firefox or IE7PRO on ie7 do a very good job of blocking 99% of online adverts. They're not so clever tho as to block the adverts on this our favourite web site. I feel morally bound not to manually add Y&Y ads to the blocked list and by and large i have found the Y&Y adverts not intrusive or particularly annoying, and yes i do occasionally click on the links, but of recent days i have started to notice more irritating animated adverts which are very shortly going to get added to my blocked list.

It's a difficult one this - we need advertising to make sure the website exists. We have to strike a balance between the amount of advertising and making sure that the content is not obscured.

Which adverts in particular are you referring to?

Personally, the top banner animating isn't too bad. The one that does irritate me is the "Latest issue" box on the top left- two animating images, with the top one especially being two completely different images, is annoying.

Its worth noting that for certain systems used mainly in larger companies, (what's called "Thin client" technology) anything involving animation, be it images or even emoticons puts an unwelcome extra performance hit on the system.

Hi Mark, tis a tricky one i grant you, the commercial imperative of the advertising and the need not to irritate the viewers. The ads that have started to bug me are the animated ones at the top of the screen, ardvark(?), rooster, ronstan, ovington etc. When they were non animated graphics then it did not bother me but going around the web site with these things flashing away at the top of the screen is really annoying. Do they really need to be so flashy? More effective surely with the clued up viewership this site has to be a bit more subtle.

Adblock and ie7pro does really enhance the browsing experience generally around the www, but as i say i have a degree of loyalty to this web site which doesn't want me to add your ads to the block list.

There has to be a better balance between informative messages and annoying messages!

Yes animated avatars are a little annoying but the worst is an animated signature and if its big its even worse since it makes vewing several messages at once a pain.  Particularly annoying as its taking up space and not earning Y&Y any money.
