2 of my friends rang me last night and they only live 5 minuets away but I didn't feel a thing. From what the said it wasn't just a little bump in the night.

Think the epicentre was Lincoln or something, we are in Rutland and it was quite a shake, didn't last very long though, it was enough to make me move about in my ed a bit and for my pretty much empty tube of toothpaste to fall over! (and that plaster but that is extremely sh*tty!)

Heh GRF ... That is the same one that did the rounds after the fuel storage in Hemel blew up a few years back.

I woke up to that one! ( And as it was a windless day, we looked back on the club anemometer, and saw there was a 7knt spike at about the same time the place blew up!

Thats one hell of a blast wave!

Yea we live pretty close and we thought we heard it, and we could easily see the smoke (we are maybe 20 miles away or roudabouts)

Quake woke me up, scared me out of my wits, I was convinced something supernatural was happening!  didn't even consider an earthquake, not usually something you associate with England, although apparently there are loads of small ones all the time that we don't notice.  Anyone know why it happened? I wasn't aware (from what i remember of gcse geography) that we're on a fault line.

I thought that it was just an almighty gust of wind then went back to sleep.  Only fond out this morning and being in peterborough was not to far away from the epicentre really/

I don't know either, we have just done the topic but only covered plate margin stuff!

A second happened soon after but not as big.

i was awake at the time watching a film. didnt feel a thing. Its largely to do with the type of soil/ rock the houses are built upon. unconsolidated rock is much less stable than than solid bedrock and so the efects of the quake are greater.

as for the quake reason, it can be due to almost anything. Britain does have some old (inactive) plate margins - menai straits covers one such.

reason why i know this - just dne earthquakes and volcanoes in A'Level geography

I'm in Sheffield and felt it quite well, the bed was shaking for england, wardrobe doors banging, glasses of water on the side table rattling, although I didn't quite wake up so I wasn't sure whether it was happening for real or I dreamt it. Having dismissed it as a dream it was quite a suprise to switch on the news in the morning and find out it wasn't

Aparantly also which floor of the building you are on, the higher up the more likely you are to feel something, also materials your house are made of.. A tutor in my house who is a geography teacher gave us a longwinded explanation of what effects how bad it is for different people over dinner yet forgot to mention why it happens

I felt it in north wales (wrexham), had just got into bed when my bed started vibrating and the street lights went out, only lasted about 15 seconds. Was pretty loud and you could feel it was pretty strong yet everyone else at home slept through it!

asked my geog teacher on where other plate margins are in the UK. Apparently theres one which goes up the menai strits, along the top of wales (at sea) then across England and goes right under where the epicentre. She said the slip would only have been about 0.5mm MAX!!!!!!. apparently its because the different plates are pushing the UK in different ways and twisting it slightly.

I haven't had a geography teacher for some time now, so I watched the brain-numbing animation on the 10 O'Clock news. Doh! Serves me right for watching ITV news...

was it a drift geology map or solid geology? (drift will only show the surface rocks which could be deposited by glaciers, rivers etc. and so wouldnt show it)
