If any Byte sailors who are going to the dinghy show can spare a few hours to man the Byte stand (part of the Ovi display) can you give me a PM please.

Thanks Chris

I was going to come and visit the Byte stand as I was considering doing the World Championships this year .

I have actually been for beer and curry every night this week! Unfortunately the weight loss is muscle mass not body fat! I have a friends wedding to go too and my suit is now like 2 sizes to big for me! However I should be back in action around March 19th, so championship racing in August is a real possibility.

I live in Weymouth so both the Moths and the Bytes are a possibility but since I have not sailed either of them the Byte sounded like the easier option (less swimming)... remember I haven't sailed for 5 months and counting!

It is not worth taking any risk with spinal injury, as the consequence do not bear thinking about! Most likely I will do domestic regatta in March (Grand slam or similar) , National events in May and international events in July. Then do some "fun" championships in August.

You going to start back up with the 49er or move onto something new? (when recovered)

In a perfect world I am going Tornado sailing, as there is much less impact on the spine (it is a smoother ride). I am currently pushing hard for an Olympic equipment re-vote in May.

I will not be 49er sailing until at least November (when the final Olympic classes decisions are made) due to the risk of further injury when sailing at speed (not an issue in a Laser).

Yea it was a shame for Cats to go out, they should have dropped match racing or something.. I am not a cat sailor myself but they are great to watch.

Hope you make a full recovery quickly so you can get on with your sailing with no worries!

Thanks Chris and Mike. The beauty of being a coach is I am now educating others , so they do not end up with the same spine issues I have had. Just out of interest Paul Goodison (amongst others my age) developed disc problems at exactly the same time as me!

Is it caused by hiking Jon??

Id rather not kill my back to be honest!

Bad hiking can cause back problems, good hiking does not... Hence why I make such fuse about hiking well as any soft tissue damage is for life!!!

However I believe my neck issues (about half the discs prolapsed) are much more a result of bouncing down in a RIB for the past ten years. Speaking to other full time coaches it seems everyone has  a stiff neck, tight lower back etc and Mark Littlejohn ended up going into the same hospital as me, just a couple of months earlier to have a disc removed as well. If you are a powerboat racer you have impact protection, we do not have this as coaches and it is something I am looking into.

This coaching lark is dangerous

Good to see you on the mend Mr E, will hopefully get you up North soon!
