Having grown up through the ranks of Mirrors, Toppers, Lasers and then Snipes I have been off the water for 10 years. Time and passion are back and a single hander will give me the most freedom. If you know a Snipe, it is a two man, tactical boat without trapeeze or spinnaker. The latter means that I am not yet up for something like the RS600 but the RS300 seems to tick all the boxes - if I can find one in the South East.

I am a capable helm and looking for a challenge.

Large Laser class at the club but I feel like I have done that.

Are there any other classes out there I should be looking at to compare the RS300?

Weight 82kg, 5' 11", age a fit 33

Thoughts appreciated. Many thanks

Get a Laser; if you are returning it will be much more fun to race against others and your build is the prefect fit for a Laser.

The 300 would be a nicer boat to sail but unless there are others at your club I'd go with the Laser.

300 is a great boat unfortunatley there are very few used ones around and you will have to travel to buy one!  Blaze is similar boat, i think there are some big fleets around south east! I have never sailed a blaze but like the look of them, i am obviously a little biased as i sail a 300, but i have to say it is the best single handed hiker i have ever owned, massive learning curve but a massive grin factor!

Not really: they're a quite different style of boat to my way of thinking. The 300 is based on 70s Moth design and is pretty light, the Blaze owes more to pre amalgamation 14s and is less light.

For me the 300 is just a delight to sail. I wouldn't say its very much easier than a 600 though really.

Thanks for everything so far. If I want to get on the water by March it may have to be one of the club Lasers to begin with.

Bough Beech SC and Hastings SC are not too far from me in East Sussex and have RS300s so I have just sent each club an email to see if anyone there can give me a go one weekend.

The Blaze looks an option but again none at present club.

There are RS600s but learning the trapeze might be too much so soon back in the saddle.

Come to BBSC we've got all the classes mentioned a fairly regular 300, blaze and rs 600 fleet if you want to check it out. We also have an abundance of lasers but my vote would be for the 300 as it's a great boat. I think the south east rs300 rep is based at bbsc anyway. If you want me to show you around PM i'm always there.

The 300 is a cracker, definately the most lively and responsive of it's type and very rewarding when you get it right. Also worth looking at a Blaze or a Vareo

Don't forget a Rooster 8.1 (although you are a bit light, I am 5KG underweight apparently).

The Blaze is good to sail it just needs a little bit of wind to get it moving. Once you can hike on the racks you will leave most other similar single handers behind (Laser, Phantom et al).

If you have the time get a Blaze as it reqrd time in the boat. If not get an 8.1, easy and lots of bang for your buck.

I have an 8.1 because I dont have the time for the Blaze any more but when I do I will be getting another one.

ratface is selling his rs300 if that what you are looking for.

having just made the transition from laser to rs300 i feel failry qualified to tell you about the learning curve. IT IS STEEP. but in the ligher breezes it is fantastic just gliding past other boats, and in the breeze, even though i capsize most windy gybes and in waves etc, i come off the water with a huge grin on my face.
i think the 300 probably takes about a year to start sailing it properly, but if during that time you decide the boats not for you, you will sell the boat easily (i saw one advertised on the thursday and picked it up on the saturday)

pm if  you want any more info/ have questions.

Steeping back in after a while out, if your not overly concerned about swimming not finishing the 300 is a great boat.  However I'd be tempted to go for a phantom or a Laser 8.1 for your first year back, you'll spend more time thinking tactics not swimming technique and will make quicker progress, then maybe the 300 1-2 seasons back in.

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

thinking about your situation this might be good advice. on the other hand, if you can pick a few days to start with where its say 8mph or so, you could get to grips with it.

i would try all the boats suggested and make up your own mind (is you go on http://www.rs300.org.uk - www.rs300.org.uk there is (or will soon be) a test sail section where someone near you lets you use their boat. in sure the blaze, phantom etc will also have a similar policy.

how heavy are you? as someone at our club used to be at the back of the fleet in a laser standard rig. they then got an old phantom and it was the same story. now that he has a new phantom and can keep it upright (nearly all the time) he is difficult to beat on the water in my 300 (im still new though).

All good advice - thanks

I am around 82kgs, 5' 11"

My club has some pool boats inc 3 Lasers so I am starting off in one of these to find my feet again and get to know the reservoir/race practice. I am looking at sailing something like the 300 in conjunction when I can play around in lighter winds and gradually increase racing/wind conditions over the season.

Harding the 300 is the boats for you, if you dontlike it you will never have any problem selling it as well!

at that weight you will be about right for a B rig. i know ratface is selling a relatively low spec 300 (around £2000i think). it would be great for a starting boat and will only need a continous kicker and enw sial in order to make it race ready.

if you do race the laser in conjunction with the 300 then it will be fine. just dont push it too high up the wind too early (i made that mistake and ended up with ripped sail, broken boom bolt, lump on my head and a beaten pride

but in lighter breezes when you can muscle it down f you tack/gybe wrong its amazingly good fun

I sail a 300 without any problem and I'm currently around your height & weight, I started far lighter though and still found it ok, mainly because the kicker is so effective. Weight isn't critical, there is a huge competitive weight range.

I sailed a few classes before I moved into the 300 but have never found anything like it. You will learn from it. It's impossible not to! This may sound confusing but after a season you should see exactly what I mean.

You also have the club lasers, so this gives you the chance to mix and match (eg f1-4 300 then f5+ laser) as you get used to the boat.  The test sail might also be an idea, but make sure you choose a good day, with a nice f2 if possible.

I have just secured an RS300 - mid 400s by private sale - pick it up when I get back from skiing. Thanks again for all the advice and no doubt I will see some of you on the circuit once I have got to grips with her. The smiles have already started....
