Nope, I shall head straight for the Pink Ladies on the MPS stand and
abuse them, then purely out of curiosity you understand I might just go
find what all the fuss is about with the Crap Handling Ever Righting
Useless Boat just in case I've totally misjudged it.
Then I shall visit dumb and dumberer to see wether the Van Der Craft
mob have suddenly realised their mistake and placed them in a straight
jacket rather than let them talk prospective clients out of buying the
3000.(that is if they can prize dumberers tongue from the shroud that he
licked and got stuck)
Then I shall have a look at the 12ft skiff bit in much the same light as the
Cherubim, I shall glance querulously at some of the old people smelling
ever so slightly of stale urine surrounding the Symmettric boats whilst
wondering how they are going to engineer the zimmer frame/spinnaker
pole transfer system.
I will not go near the RS stand this year for they have sold out to
polyethylene and shouldgostraightohell.. Unless of course I spot
someone I know to yell abuse at.
I am also going to have a second look at the Vortex as a possible means
to crack single hand trapezing on the nights when the crew cannot get
unhandcuffed from his bed. (She often forgets where she put the key and
has to go to work)
My ultimate quest chequebook in hand is to seek the Holy Grail of all
coastal club sailors, which I sincerely hope will be found on the Alto boat
stand, there I shall just stare open mouthed rocking forward and back
dribbling ever so slightly..

Gnash their teeth they may, they can go join all those other old people
wafting stale urine about like 470 sailors..
No modern thinking fellow such as I, is ever going to thrash about
sticking poles in various unmentionable places whilst the rest of the
world has moved on.
I've even seen the odd 470 sailor spill his coffee and soak his rolled up
copy of the yachting times as some incompetent crew fellow tripped up
with that pole thing. He even had to shift slightly in his armchair, imagine
that.

But it has features, such as the rotating pole, that have been tried (4000, 400) and subsequently discarded as providing little real benifit.

Aah, I do so like it when God speaks to me, gives me such a sense of
psychosis.
So now what Boats do I like?
I do like the MPS and enjoyed wrestling with it, it is imho a flawed design
but nevertheless offers a simple layout that is easier for the newcomer to
understand albeit it impossible to be able to sail from scratch. Had I been
ten years younger I'm sure I'd have dialed it, but even then my home
beach is not the perfect environment for such a boat, had there been
something similar with at the very least a kick up rudder it might be more
manageable.
I also enjoyed my confidence being restored in the Laser 3000 not much
wrong with it other than its size. I like the RS400 if I were looking for a
two man hiker. It was love at first site with the 29er, but it suffers the
same problems the MPS does with regards our beach.
The RS500 I still like and will continue with if the Alto doesn't prove to be
all I expect of it, but we're right at the crew weight limit so suffer as a
result.
You can't help but be impressed by a 49er, but when virtually the entire
Olympic fleet demonstrate in front of you just how ludicrously difficult
they are in dead flat water, what possible hope could we have usng one
on ours.
So that leaves the only real performance thoroughbred that's been tested
over the years, but is sadly very dated, the 505. Funny the guy who used
to win loads of stuff in five ohs back in the day was on the phone to me
today and I forgot to mention this development, so seriously if that Alto
does what it says on the tin, they wont see our backsides for spray this
upcoming season, I shall have to get some new buttless chaps to
celebrate.

So why do you have such a grudge against 'extreme' boats such as the 12foot skiff etc...
|
Posted By: FireballNeil

Yeah good point- you call 470s girly and faffing around with a symmetric pole yet you sail a 500 anyway! Not exactly the most high performance boat around!

It's not a "grudge" it's the Irony of young twirps over canvassing a 12ft sled
to the point it tail walks uncontrollably just at the point you might think it
would become fun.
To me that sort of adrenaline requirement is far better served by windsurfing
or kite surfing. You go faster, or jump higher, all the stuff the young "dudes"
appear o be trying to emulate in their over powered out of control antics..
So its wide open to ridicule, well in my book at least.
The 470? Its an interclub thing, they are a way easier boat to sail than a 500,
why they even train chimps to use them.

Rather a young twerp than an old fart. Double handed boat
equals a team effort. Wind surfing and kite surfing look fun but rather
solitary and lonely. I don't think I’ll go back to sailing a single hander
anytime soon! Enjoy your excuse for a revolution, aka the "Alto".
I hear they take degenerates for day trips 500's, it makes nice change from "the staring window".

Between the bouts of dementia, I think Grumpy actually makes many good and vaild points. If the sport wants to attract people from outside of traditional sailing families, then much of what he says should be carefully considered.
Anyway, I shall be at the show on the Saturday so might see some of you there. Mine's a guinness.

Well that's certainly true. I think if I examine what is most enjoyable from
this new found enthusiasm is the team effort, when that boom comes
over smacks us both in the forehead and we eventually surface, we can
check each other out for signs of bleeding..
So yes in all seriousness a fair point, but you can windsurf and or kitesurf
alongside a chum, my crew and I have been windsurfing in waves
together and or racing against each other on long windsurfing boardsfor
thirty years, but probably have not enjoyed each others company more
than recently when crammed into that dodgy little boat.
But I would say this to you young "twerps" (thanks for correcting my
spelling) if, as you so obviously do, enjoy your sailing, dont live through
your lives without trying windsurfing, it's a totally different experience,
one not to be missed.

Funnily enough Grumpf i was a sailor and not a windsurfer then some of my sailing mates who also windsurf invited me to go to dahab with them for a week and get some tuition, now i have just bought my own kit.
So you definately speak a fair point, windsurfing is worth trying although you need to stick at it for a bit as the first bit is REALLY hard and it doesn't seem worth it then you start planing and it does seem worth it

Way easier to sail? Thats why you don't like the 470, but you don't like 12foot skiff because it's too hard to sail.....

You shouldn't have a mind capable of being hurt if you are the
omnipresent deity & supreme being and where did I say they are difficult
to sail? I've never tried one but they are used by small children who make
them look to difficult to sail although that's fairly common, I've watched
Olympians in flat water making sailing look damn near impossible..
My concern was the hull length is to short for our particular wave length
its been my experience anything shorter than 14ft can have a problem in
the Channel where we sail.

Hmmmmm i think some of the skiffy boys should lend you their boat for an afternoon
(and then video it)
So if it's only your circumstances that make the 12 impractical then why do you have such a problem with other people sailing them? And whats wrong with B14s?
