I will try and have the boat done for the end of April. We're currently in the fit out stage but there aren't really enough hours in the day to get it done. (those of you who know how many fittings and rope are on an Osprey will know why!)

I think we're going for a Selden carbon stick with Hyde sails. The fitout is Ronstan to show of some of their new orbit blocks and the rope will be Marlow where possible as they have some funky new ropes.

Night out in Derby for Blithfield then. I'm sure my housemate won't mind a few extra people crashing on the floor!

And you could also wind everyone up by turning up with a loose footed main.

Be nice to see you out and about though Mr Noyce.  Will you be having the flames paint job from the bow with black back ground fading through to silver at the stern?

Marvellous

I still want a go

hi all,

i`m new to this forum and sailing, but i have the chance to buy an osprey mk2 that needs work, the deck may need replacing and the guy said somthing about the stem? is this a common/difficult problem? and the running rigging will need replacing,i can get this boat for a seemingly good price but am concerned as to how much this will cost me to get her to a sailable condition, they seem like good popular boats but i haven`t seen many for sale is there a reason for this? she is made from wood and i only have a few days yo make my mind up so any info or advice on these boats would be appreciated

thanks to all

john

Welcome to the forum Jonster, The Osprey is an awesome boat! Elegant, fast! I owned a very old one for a short time.  If the boat you are looking at needs the Deck and stem replacing i should hope that it is very cheap probably in fact free!

Re-decking a boat isnt really that hard but its important you used the right materials and have the appropriate ammount of space! Replacing a stem on an osprey may be a more time consuming and skilled builders job! i couldnt comment as i have no exsperience of replacing one.

thanks for a quick reply,

well, i need to speak to the guy again but he said he`s prepared to deliver it to which i was surprised as he lives about 4 hrs away!! he wants £290 for it and its got a few good sails an 1 or 2 thet need servicing and a spinnaker.I`m not sure if the stem needs replacing but i`ll pull him up on it. the boat i`m looking at is on boatsandoutboards! but that price is without the trailer.Any one got any ideas on the cost of replacing the running rigging on these boats?

cheers all

depends what you mean by running rig, if its just haliards, £30 each haliard.

If its a complete re rig (kicker, outhaul, downhaul etc) i would say nearly closer to £100-150 just for the rope.

I think you have to be prepared to spend a fair amount if you are getting a 'bargain' boat. We started off with an elderly boat and by the time you have replaced rigging, sails, mast, boom, most blocks, ropes, etc, let alone the physical stuff of repairs and upgrades (In our case to a Mark 2 B) you have spent a lot - But we also learnt a lot so when we upgraded we were able to get faster quicker.

So it depends on how much time you have and how much you enjoy tinkering rather than sailing.

We have loved our 12 years of Osprey sailing so far and are now on our third boat - a Hartley Mark 4 - and have no plans to move class until we are finally physically incapable.

cheers guys,

i really like the idea of owning and working on a boat espiecially an osprey, but as i am new to this world i didnt want to get sold a s**t heap that will have me regretting!! i`m a painter and my wood working skills are fair and i would have weekends an evenings to go at it so it would be a great project for me but if the stem`s gone i`ll probably leave it as i would like to sail somtime this year. I`m cool with those prices for the running rigging, but in you guys opinion is that a fair price for the boat? as the boat market is so varied,i know this is a bit of a hard question but this may be my first boat so i`m trying to get as much info as possible because i`m not 100% sure what i`m looking at! I think i`ll go down ther and have a look before he brings it here an i feel obliged to buy it

I have just had a look at the ad Jonster, and in my opinion i think it would be better spending a little more and buying the boat in my previous post (one at Hayling) This boat will almot certainly in the long run cost you less to mantain, and probably needs less bits and bobs to get sailing! Also fromthe brief pictures in the ad i think that the blue boat is missing a few fittings and these can be exspensive one sing le cleat usually costs £15 and you probaly need 6 as well as any missing blocks! If it is such a bargin, why has it been forsale for so long?

or if you've got around £6500 to spend, buy Stan's boat

Depending on how soon you were looking to buy an Osprey I'd advise a trip to the dinghy show next weekend to have a chat to the people on the Osprey class stand and us on the Hartley Laminates stand. You'll learn lots and might get some fresh ideas. Come and say hello.

yea, i`m sure southhampton has a big sailing scene and the fact its been on there a while did cross my mind! and it did seem odd he was prepared to drag it half way up the country and was flexible about when he could do it! i`l think i`ll take your advice and save a few more pennies, and thinking about it maybe a smaller boat `14 or so, a scorpion or a international i dont mind a bit of work but as i said i want to be on the water this year which can be costly itself, well it is at rutland near me

where is the dinghy show? that sounds like a good idea as most of my sailing has been at sea on yachts

If your looking at a Scorpions, then it  might be worth looking at Larks as they have similar crew weights but second hand examples seem to be cheeper.

o.k i`ll take a look, but i think i`m gonna go down to the show at the weekend to get a better idea of things. How much difference does the crew weight make?as i`m not looking at entering any races,or is it a safety thing
