What usually happens when you join a sailing club?
Is there normally an induction pack, club member number etc. etc.?

It depends on the club i would suspect, at our club you get your dinghy park, key and membership number as well as a seasonal magazine! Which informs you of events, social events etc. etc.

some clubs do new members evenings so you can meet the people that run the place and also meet up with the other members of the club. as well as keys,(club depending) most clubs you have to pay extra to store your boat in the club boatpark and you may have to do a few duties a year aswell (rescue boat, bar?, Galley, and working partys)

We have to pay a deposit for the key, but we get the upgrade key free on return of the old one if they ever upgrade the locks

You'll definately be put on the duty list, sailing club secretaries very often struggle to allocate duties fairly without making the same people do several a year so new members especially in a smaller club are often pressed into service.
It's a good way to meet people and learn how the club works, and get introduced to racing, so don't worry about it too much

At the tiny club I go to (Broadwater) we get a key to the main gate and the combination code for the lock on the clubhouse, an introduction pack, a newsletter and a membership card.
At the club I belong to in Somerset (Wimbleball) we just get a sticker for the boat if we keep it in the boat park and the combination for the padlock on the main gate.
I've just joined Datchet for the winter but haven't had anything yet - I think they are in hibernation!

At ours we'll help you build the boat, find you a slot on the beach to park, probably hand you a beer or a cuppa and, if you don't run away fast enough, we'll make you Commodore. All for £25 Membership

Actually this is something we are looking at, at Tynemouth, how do we not ignore new members. It is the easiest thing to appear cleaky to a newcomer to any club, this is twice as bad for newcomers to the sport. So it what is becoming a disturbing trend GRF has made another good point

Seems to me that boat is very quick! And has a ridiculously light daggerboard that I nearly caber(sp) tossed into draycote water by accident!

Seems to me that G.R.F should sail a Cherub before he
comments on them and then we'll see what he has to say about them. He might
realise how bloody tired we are of his Cherub bashing ways (despite my recent
laser bashing, but I don't hold too many grudges).
I think you'll find the Cherub class is one of the friendliest, most passionate
and most welcoming classes around.
G.R.F, I THINK all Cherub sailors on the forum would like you to at
least try a Cherub and give your verdict.
They are wonderfully responsive and you can feel everything that is going on
within the boat. They plane easily (who doesn’t like to plane?), have very
flexible rules so YOU can have the boat they way YOU like it. Imagine if you
could actually have the "on the fly" adjustment that you so deeply
desire, G.R.F. You could pioneer this development in dinghy world! I
personally think that if you were to look into class (or any development class
for that matter) you would see that it's ideally fitted to your way of
thinking. You obviously love to tinker, adjust and refine things. You never
seem to be satisfied. I would welcome you with open arms if you were to join
the Cherub class. I think that you would bring noting but good things to it!

An open invitation - get in there GRF!
Or maybe we should try to keep this somewhere nearthe original subject?
My club provides stickers newsletters help with a space, a duty or two. But if the new members are 'slow in coming forward' they may find it hard to get Strikes me that a proper intro is a very good idea.

I think GRF just gets tired as many people do of this forum seeming to be the Cherub class association forum, and you all seem to bite easily so its just like catching a fish in a bucket!

I don't think GRF has ever even seen a Cherub, he just likes to take the
p1ss and it seemed the dominant group on this board and lets face it, the
Logo on the sail? Gee Aich Ee Why immediately sprang to mind which
automatically creates a target rich environment for the serial p1ss taker.
Then getting him banned by running to teacher..
Anyway as you can probably spot now, there was nothing personal in it
and his p1ss taking is not class specific, he hates everybody, as only the
true curmudgeon can..
Which is why he's a fair target for ridicule in return
However in all seriousness, he doesn't think a boat only 12 ft long would
work on his home water when quite often the waves can be as big as that,
but not nice long flowing waves, they're short steep 'orrible boat breakers
and back on topic is why the club is so important, in all seriousness we
have to pitch in to help each other launch and recover.
So 14 ft probably has to be the minimum, but the thought of a DIY
anything goes class is definitely appealing..

Phone the secretary, find out when something is happening and go down and meet people. Introduce yourself... If they're still unfriendly then look for another club, but mostly everyone's just too busy or doesn't realise many new members feel intimidated (left out) by it all.
On class associations I have to say Cherubs are the 2nd most friendly & welcoming, I remember being invited to their Chilli night on the Saturday of the Dinghyshow a few years back and I don't even sail one.
