Has anyone had a go? I downloaded Google sketch up and had a go just for fun. I can't get it to render though :(. Post a picture of yours up!

Made this this afternoon in a few spare hours. Influenced by several cherub designs. "Paterson 7" and "Butt Plug" being the main two. This is the first time I've used a CAD program, let alone designed a hull!
So go easy!

It's difficult to see the design () but you might get the idea...  I can send you the file if you want. You'll have to download Google Sketch up, but its free and only takes a couple of mins.

My future aim is to design a very light, very fast single handed, hiking spinnaker boat.

Can you let me know when you find out how to 'flesh out' the design i've just had a look at it and it seems quite a good little tool, so long as you can get it to add surfaces.

The boat looks pretty cool.  As to your idea i saw someone at our local club tried putting a symettric kite on a non foiling moth, using the wings instead of a kite pole.  Went quite well although he kept binning it on the drops.  Would be interesting to see an assy kite on one.

Not really designed by me, it's a Simon Roberts design, but changed from wings to racks and an I14 style gantry with a little bit of input from me...

Its about time Simon came up with a successor to the Slug - its being ridiculously long lived for a Cherub design.

Jim...I think he's thinking about it, however I'm not sure how you'd make it much better really!

MpHarris...I'll find out for you

BNS, very good, however I reckon a bit less rocker and longer chines might improve it's planing abilities somewhat...although looks like it will be good in chop...

I'd like to design and easy to sail boat for an intro to twin wires. Kind of like what the spice should have been.

M_liddell .. You mean Like the spice?

Go try. You never know, you might like it.

May be a dead class, but prices are stable because of it, its cheap to get in, you're bound to get what you paid for it, and they are fun!

It would be unwise to bet on that. The dead SMODs are worth d*** all because there's d*** all demand. Could take you a very long time to sell. With things like that better to figure the money as gone for ever, then if you can get anything back its a bonus.

Yeah the Spice concept but a good boat rather than the piece of junk topper produced. There really isn't a decent alternative. It is quite nice sailing a twin wire boat that won't eat you alive in > 20knts.

M_liddell have you ever sailed a spice? if not then dont you have no rights to dis the boat.

and unlike cherub's it doesnt break every time it is used, and ive had it out in 23knts+ on the sea and survived...

Most of the fleet was out in more than that recently at weymouth and the only breakage I heard of was on my boat where one of the blocks in the kicker system wore through the 1.5mm vectran strop tieing it to the boat. Hardly surprising and its now been spec'ed up to something entirely more suitable.

Nothing broke on the cherub I sailed, Loco Perro. Nothing major was broken at the nationals that comes to mind. A mast snapping was the biggest thing I can think of, and you cant say that other classes don't have that problem! The boat that had the most problems was "Oops". But what do you expect from a boat that uses modified Royal Mail letter bags as a spinnaker chute! Some of the boats went out in in 30+ knots with no boat problems, just sailor problems . The Welsh boys were fine, nothing broke and no sailor issues. Spinnaker runs all over the shop.

Still want a drag race? Me in my 97' rules cherub (Flat Stanly, picking it up on Friday!) against you in the spice. I might throw on a bigger kite..
When are you next going for a blast day on a big lake? Give me a shout.

http://sailingsource.com/cherub/test/doku.php/secondhand

Carbon/nomex construction, It's isn't going to break any time soon! A bargain at 2 grand! Carbon rig, 05 rules, self tacking jib, bloodaxe foils, enough sails to fill you bedroom and a combi trailer! On Wednesday, you said you wanted to to get into 12 foot skiffs, Cherubs are the perfect stepping stone.

Disclaimer:
People will say that it's a bit silly of me to be talking about drag racing before I have even got the boat, but it's only for a laugh people!

I would love to! When? But I can't drive and can't get anywhere unless other people have double stacker's and are willing to pick me up. I have to scrounge a lift and a tow, everywhere I go .  The Cherub hasn't got nearly as much sail area as a 14, and I bet you have a kite of about 30-35 meters square! It's only 97 rules (for the moment). We'll still eat that spice for breakfast!

Yes, I have sailed a spice. Probably about 4 times in total but enough for me to form an opinion on it. I had fun but it has some quite serious flaws. I wish that someone would take the concept and create a new design.

I wish someone would get the 5000 mould and make one that doesn't weigh 110 kilos! If Laser did what Vander craft did for the laser 3000 and sold it for around £8000, I think that class would take off with enough marketing. The 3000 wasn't very successful in comparison to the 5000, so I think the 5000 is the ideal candidate for modernising/updating. Laser need an RS800 in there range.

Atum bom is at home right now becasue they jsut got back from Carnac and they at Brightlingsea in two weeks. I somehow doubt oops will win unless the breeze is well and truely up. Plus oops dosn't go upwind that quickly

Perhaps that is the problem, after a season in a spice -esque  boat most people would want an 800.

What are "natinoals" . I don't know how many people have entered yet, so i don't know how big/small the task is. It will still earn me "water cred". It's like "street cred" only a little damper...
