I can't work out what the bloody hell a SMOD is! I hadn't heard of a skiff until recently! So forgive my ignorance All I've got so far is S-M-One-Design. Maybe the M is manufactured? Skiff-Manufactured-One-design...Just thinking out loud now. Someone tell me, please.

Thanks.

What it really refers to are boats where the class rules are very tight and controlled by the manufacturer giving them a monopoly in the market, typically boats by Topper, Laser and RS.

There are others, as well as the normal Topper, Laser, RS/LDC.

Wayfarer? Now under the control of one builder??

Comet fleet?

Whilst you're right that there are others (the ex-Topper classes come to mind), the Wayfare isn't one- I believe that others are still able to build wooden ones, and Hartley offers more than one design of GRP hull. Do they have a choice of sails too?

Most of the Ovington boats are quasi-SMOD- they're the only manufacturer for them in UK (and for some, Europe), and the niners are restricted in rig, sail etc aren't they?

The original SMOD (apart from the St Mawes One Design, which uses the initials differently...) was the Firefly, mass produced by Fairey Marine in 1946. Just shows, a SMOD doesn't have to have a short shelf life if the design is right.
