I can't work out what the bloody hell a SMOD is! I hadn't heard of a skiff until recently! So forgive my ignorance All I've got so far is S-M-One-Design. Maybe the M is manufactured? There are others, as well as the normal Topper, Laser, RS/LDC. Wayfarer? Now under the control of one builder?? Comet fleet?

Whilst you're right that there are others (the ex-Topper classes come to mind), the Wayfare isn't one- I believe that others are still able to build wooden ones, and Hartley offers more than one design of GRP hull. Do they have a choice of sails too? Most of the Ovington boats are quasi-SMOD- they're the only manufacturer for them in UK (and for some, Europe), and the niners are restricted in rig, sail etc aren't they? |

The original SMOD (apart from the St Mawes One Design, which uses the initials differently...) was the Firefly, mass produced by Fairey Marine in 1946.
