So there is a new challenge as the one accepted by Alinghi is not valid for all sorts of reasons. Main one being the challenging club does not exist.

See this link http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/?article=137348 - http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/?article=137348

It wouldn't be the cup without some controvesy. We could see a big miss match again like in 1988.

Adendum

I just looked on the GGYC web site and they are sugessting a boat 90 ft long with a 90 ft beam. So a cat or tri may be what they have in mind. http://www.ggyc.com/GGYCChallenge.pdf - http://www.ggyc.com/GGYCChallenge.pdf

Well, that's a matter of opinion. There is plenty of precedents of challenges from made-up yacht clubs. Hard to tell how this one will work out.

I am reading it that this is a blanket Certificate that will be consenually amended at a later date. I don't think you will see 90 foot long by 90 foot wide multihulls!! The match racing element would completely disappear, and the boats just too far apart on the course. The TV companies would hate it. They want the one on one competition, and tension, like they get in golf or tennis. Joe Public understands that, so it doesn't matter that they don't sail, or play golf, or tennis.

And just how do the Swiss challenge for/defend the America's Cup? Last time I looked on an atlas Lake Geneva was land locked and freshwater, not "an arm of the sea".

Correction. I just re-read the GGYC document. You only have to have a regatta on the sea. The Club doesn't have to be on the sea. Presumeably Alinghi pays for a regatta somewhere in order to qualify.

Another interesting point is that GGYC wants to hold it in July next year.... which isn't a very long time away if you're going to build an entirely new fleet of race yachts

I'm not sure what the point in making the boats bigger is.  Do they think it will make it more exciting?  It's surely just a tactic to force out some of the lower budget teams out.  It's very unlikely to make for close racing.

Why is it the cup always seems determined to do itself harm?

More sabre rattling going on. http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/?article=137559 - http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/?article=137559

Seems Geneva are delibrately miss reading Golden Gate's letter. The race date for next year was only if a proper event like the 32nd could not be agreed on.

In the mean time the Spanish club have held a regatta - for oppies.

The Spanish are so keen to support the children here, so there's no problem with that!

They think that regatta was just a scam to try and blag that they have held a regatta so that the yacht club complies with the deed of gift.

Most of the Spanish media think that it was simply a training session.

I'm pleased also. We had a great time the watching the first 2 races. It would of been a shame to move it from Valencia after all the effort put in.
