quote from report on Pico nationals on Y&Y online today

"The Laser Centre helped with the loan of new black mylar Sport rigged Picos. This rig is super cool and gives the Pico designer style that white sail classes only dream of"

... urgh, I feel slightly slimy reading it... this is marketing shmoose at it's best (or worst).... any one else got any classics?

(and no being obvious and sighting those terrible P+B ads, sorry I mean news items, that appear constantly on this site)

As much as I really like Rooster's products, I feel that this may be another example ?

Pfft.

That does seem a LITTLE like abuse of the system.

Surley shops / outlets ( p&b / rooster / purple marine ) could have a column of their own on the front page - with it being optional to view of course.

I like looking there at results ( the whole idea of it ) but then see half the threads end up with " a good week in all for "INSERT SAILMAKER"s sails with XX first places and YET ANOTHER trophy."

Yep I agree with you there, Webmuppet. As much as I like Rooster products, I thought they reached the bottom of the barrel today.

Pleaaaaase don't tell me that was staged! It'd would be unbearable... And what next? A partnership with KFC?

I guess the rooster stuff is 'advertorial'.... and the multi full page laser ads must count for something.

Laser did bring 12 x picos and new sails for lending out, and of course hoping to make sales. ( only 'real' laser sails allowed... but most people at the club have the caws clone at 2/3 the price, so some heavy use was made of the laser sails.)

However super-cool? .... maybe not.

Y&Y have to pay for the site somehow, and the Advertorial approach is far better than popups. We all know that something with Rooster or Hyde in the little pic is going to involve selling, don't we? You don't have to click on it!

the constant adverts get on my t**s as well. am in favour of giving them their own space, like is already available in the 'Advertisers' bit.

its late, i hope you understand what im getting at?!

"It's there not thereabouts"  is a particular favourite

and could not be more inaccurate for a plastic, skiff style, family, racing, fun, single handed, double hander with a centre thwart and poor performance that's hard to sail I think!

indeed.... it's thereabouts not anywhere in particular.

But it's "only" £5k so sells like hot cakes.  Good ol marketin boys.

Hi all

Sorry everyone but we've been through this before.

This site isn't funded with magic beans. It takes hard work and money. Advertorial has proved the best way that marketing partners (advertisers) get  return and it is the path we have chosen to fund the site. You can choose not to look at the advertorial articles - they are clearly marked with a logo from the company. Many people choose to read their articles and quite often pick up a bargain or find something useful out.

As for the Pico nationals report - Laser don't actually advertise online (yet) - the bit about the new style sails was in the report that we received and I chose to leave in.

If the advertisers choose not to advertise with this site then I'm afraid this forum that you're having a rant on would cease to exist.

Your choice. Or maybe you'd prefer pop-ups all over the place, or maybe paying to view this website... or maybe nothing at all?

Now, my rant is over have a good weekend.

Mark

I actually enjoy reading the little stories that the advertisers put in as it makes a change from them plainly telling you to buy the product and gives some background on the product being sold.

Mark,

We know you guys work hard and spend a lot of money and have to get a return on it somehow..

Come on people is it really that much of a hardship to have a fews ad articles. There really are not that many of them.

If you don't want to read them just pass them by....remember you have the power of the click!

Well said Mark,

People complain that the profile of dinghy sailing is so low and that for example there is no TV coverage. Well the only way to change that is to bring money into the sport and the only place that is going to come from is business (unless you know anyone with a few million quid they want to donate). So if as a sport we want to take thier money then we need to make sure that the business gets something out of it.

Now in Y&Y's case that means advertorial or brand editorial or adverts - name your poison. For the Clubs and Classes it has to be done differently and thats why we have gone down a different route. Have a look at http://www.12footskiff.com - http://www.12footskiff.com and you'll get a feel for how we've gone about it and why we've managed to draw money into the class.

Alan

It's all about balance and I think Mark gets it about right ...

I would be happy to pay for subscription to an ad free site but I suspect I am in the minority.

Staged? Hmmmm, let me just think about that for a microsecond..... (And yet, I do actually admire Steve C's business mind - he just as sharp on that as he is with the sailing)
