I'll try and dig out pictures from the Blackwater. I know of a sailing club where the seals sit on the moored Day Boats!!

A bloke told me that he "tacked" a basking shark into an enterrpise fleet at prestwick in the 1970s........shouting "shark" as it followed their foils into the slow moving race...

fishy tale that one.....but you do get basking sharks in the firth of clyde

I havn't seen basking sharks in the north sea but we have been known for many wales to get beached and loads of seals to be swimming around.

Whats better though, I was sailing in the Canarie Islands and dolphins were jumping around the boat and a giant turtle swan by, it was amaizing

I Remember being 'buzzed' by a school of dolphins in the Thames estuary (off Herne Bay) whilst moving a race mark during the Albacore Worlds in the late eighties and a few years later having a game 'peepo' with a seal whilst rowing out to the committee boat.

we get dolphins here all the time, also lots of fish, jellyfish and sharks. last year i saw a bull shark jump up out of the water and spalsh back down on its side. pretty cool.good game for the summer out here is go out for a sail in the harbour and see how many jellyfish you can collect on your centerboard by the time you come back in.

Just to prove that Scotland is inhabitable for wildlife at this time of year. Some pics I took (on my phone sorry about quality) as we motored out of Rhu Marina in our departement yacht yesterday.

And on the way back in

No so nice when you sail into them at helensburgh though!!!

Happened to my old man last year in his contender - broke the board rope and almost ripped the rudder off. Seal seemed a bit discontented too

You may not know, I may not know, but someone will and will tell you, which is why the reply should read

You've got your job cut out with our new friend; her spelling mistakes are bigger than her (sorry Helz, it's cheap I know, but your sharp public-school wit will find a suitable cutting reply, I'm sure) .

I admire anyone who is brave / stupid enough to stick there head above the parapet, but do expect to be shot at - especially if you start shooting first

I can cope with having my spelling and gramatical errors corrected. It is good for me I might actualy learn something useful rather than apsoluty useful peices of information such as how to work out a break even point or find out if a coastline is concordant or discordant.

Didn't a basking shark bring a RS800  to an abrupt stop at Prestwick in 2005?

Have seen Dolphins within arms reach at Stonehaven sailing out to the race course on the 5.9 a couple of years ago and plenty of seals at my home club Dalgety Bay SC

I'm sure all you contender sailors are well aware that Looe - venue for this year's nationals - is the shark fishing capital of the UK!

Can we have protective nets like they had in Sydney for the 2000 games pretty please ?

Posted By: Black no sugar
Date Posted: 22 Mar 07 at 11:26am
That's a good idea - Looe needs to do something to protect the sharks.

I remember one memorable Scorpion nationals at Sidmouth. Busy planing along on a tight reach (no kite, it was blowing 25-30kts) and a school of dolphins decided to swim through and around the fleet.

Was one of those truly magical moments see a dolphon swin within inches of the boat....well it was until the helm started hollering at me to hike out harder (slave driver she was).
