Hmmm, trust me when a 12 gets up and goes it is FAR from boring.
By the looks of the pics they are under-ragged, as it was their first time out and they were probably playing it safe. Here is me sailing the same boat in a bit more breeze, certainly not uber-boring. Oh, and this pic was taken about 1 minute before a 25 minutes to sort out mega capsize!!!
That boat needs a few tweaks/mods including a back tank. It is VERY hard to sail round the corners and respect is due to the guys for being the right way up at all!
Oh, and by the way, biggest kite for an RS800, 21.5sqm, biggest kite for a 12, 60 sqm...

No its the No3 without the large roach. No3 kite and jib. Yeh it sinks when tacking a lot! just couldnt keep it upright once went over cos kite kept falling out, around the jib sheet into the water. So annoying. Got cold then went it, sailed in afternoon but not enough wind for No3 rig. oh well

Pants. I wished I'd known about that sail when I used the boat, might have spent more time sailing and less swimming!!

I was just really annoyed we couldnt sail it too well, we can sail better than that but the tangles really messed it up. Kinda made it look like we were really crap.

12's are def more fun than an 800, not knocking an 800 mind u, still a really fun boat just in a different way! Was first time in a 12ft skiff, gusting over 25kts, i would like to see how you would fair first time out.....

In all fairness in the afternoon the guys did look underpowered considering they were single wiring with their rig, and Tom still with hypothermia..
Before we gave em a lift back to their boat there was much talk to swapping rigs but not enough time really.. plus as a first sail i would really wanna push it either!
havoc certainly does look to have potential of being a bit of a beast.. or at least living up to her name!

I suspect all you 12ft skiff boys wil end up like windsurfers ... moaning all the time about having the wrong rig up ...
With our variable weather I'd always go for a rig which is just a little more than you think you need ... that way you will always have fun even if it is a bit of a handfull ... nothing so dull as being under canvassed.

Thats the idea rick - unfortunately the boat was on the other side of the pond, and the wind died - we jus wanted to go for a play, so by the time we'd swapped to the No1 rig it wuda been dark! oh well!!
Still, much fun was had - im now level 2 swimming

And Alex and i though it would be best to give him his RYA level 2 as well....
with an action plan : must not sail unsupervised and must practice capsize drill safely

Congratulations to Andy and Tom I have nothing but respect for them. It was a big day and to have the guts to get out there and have a first go at sailing a 12 was really something. I was surprised they got of the beach let alone managed to get the kite up. For two guys to start off in that weather really was gutsy.
The morning was absolutely huge. Even with the No.3 rig up we were completely hanging on to it. The main was inverted most of the time upwind and the downwind was completely ragged. It spat us out a few times with going down the mine or avoiding collisions, oh and one tea bag that end up with us being thrown off the back.
As for the pics, They will look a bit tame as they were taken later in the afternoon when the wind had dropped off below 10 knots. We should have been on No.1's. Even so we were both out on the wire when everyone else was sat in the middle of the boats.
The boats are not easy to sail, they rely on impeccable timing in the corners. Havoc is more difficult to tack than Grumble but on Sunday we stalled out several times during tacks, it was just that windy.
There is now a select club in the UK of those who have actually sailed a twelve and I'm delighted to welcome Andy and Tom to it.
