My dads after a single handed asymettric boat. He is about 14 stones (i think ). He doesnt want a trapeze boat, so that rules out the RS 700 and Musto skiff. We have recognised that there is the RS vareo (a big contending option), and also an old class... the mx-ray. There are also boats like the topaz, but he wants a competitive racer... no slower than a handicap of 1250 i expect, and no fast than a fireball (950??).

Any Suggestions welcome.

(ps. we are also tempted to join forces and sail an RS200/400)

Theres a guy at our club who weighs about 14 stone, he sails a vareo very competitively. Is the assymetric a must have? otherwise, has he considred a phantom?

Yeh, he has... but he thinks he is to light for a phantom... he may be 13 stone. He has also considered the new phantom (the red eye solution), but that class hasnt taken off to well in the uk, although there are 3 at our club.

Im pretty certain he would like a asymetric. he wants fun and speed.

Having 3 solutions at your club sounds like theyve taken off very well in your area! they were only launched at the last sailboat show (I think) which puts them at less than a year old... give them some time.

I dont think an mxRay will carry 13stone too well and I dont think they do too well on handicap (though id be happy to be corrected by someone whos sailed them... Mr Sparrow?) So if your looking for a singlehanded assymetric then your only option is a Vareo.

There are a number of other boats that will give you fun and speed without an assy or trap... The IC being the first that comes to mind though a little faster than your 'fireball' py limit!

Finding a crewed boat may well be a better option though

awesome.... thanks u guys.

I have been looking around at different views, but there is nothing better than personal experience.  If he gets one or not i will tell you guys, and his reasons for getting the boat or whatever.

Come to think of it, does anyone know what the test days are like? I have never been to a demo day. Do they simply throw you in the boat and let you sail it??

14 stone isn't very good for a MX-Ray.

I'd say 12 was about the max to get the best out of it.

The space in the Vareo can be useful - early in the year I helmed one in a blow while the owner got to grips with flying the kite and seeing what it could do without having to worry about steering and all that. It seemed to work, as I now see the kite popping up in all sorts of weather conditions!

I dont think my dad would be agile enough for a RS300.

Paul, i didnt recongise you in your interesting hat. Are there not a few RS200's already at hunts??

I also want my dad to get the RS vareo so that i can give you a run for your money

I couldnt come yesterday because of school (as per norm), but i was down weekend before. 4.7 in light winds, and finn managed to capsize to windward on a reach in force 2/3... How does that boy manage it??

Oli,

There are 2 there, the only one that goes out regularly in the summer is Mike and Nicola.

If he does get a Vareo I wouldn't mind a play....but I still think he should get a Blaze...simple fast and you dont need to be he-man to sail it (you should have a go sometime). Anyway you are quick enough in that 4.7 of yours, don't want you in anything faster!

I just think the vareo would be great fun. Although the traditional hunts courses wouldn't help, as proved by most of the asymetrics.

My dad is still fairly interested in the blaze... how is the class still going?? How did you do in that blaze open?

The class is going great. The new builder has been appointed and has commisioned an initial build of new boats (which I think most if not all have sold).

I was 14th out of 30 at the inlands, about where I had hoped just need to work a bit and get in to the top 10.

Assymetrics were the way to go last Sunday but that is the exception rather than the rule (although Jon W always did well in hs RS200).

Well done.... keep up the pace.

Yeh... and the sunday before that there was a close to perfect course for a asymetric, it was a beat, reach, very deep reach, beat, reach, tight reach. i think the downwind legs went wrong, and they turned into reaches. there were two laser 2k's, and they both did reasonably well (dont quote me there).

Maybe there is a change coming over the club....
