HI im looking for a good beginner Cat for sailing in an estury. I have done 15 years in dart 18s but that was 10 years ago and i only want one for my son and his crew to practice in. The things i'd like it to be are:

  • Cheap £2000 - £2500
  • Stable
  • Fast
  • Good build
  • Easy to get out of the water

I hope you can help me again

Cheers, Mike

How old is your Son ?

I was helming a Dart 18 at 12 years old.

For that price you are probably looking at Dart 18, Sprint 15 (Dart 15) or an old Hurricane (which might be a bit much for kids). or an old Nacra / Prindle.

Got to be a Dart with that list.

If you get a good one and look after it you will also be able to sell it on when the kids get older. Problem with the prindle, nacra type of stuff is it's a bit harder to shift

Why get a cat? You can get an early 14 which still gives you plenty of bang for your buck!

Do you think an I14 is for kids ?

Also, don;t they need a fair amount of T+C ?

don't know a load about cat's but there's currently a Hobie 15 and a Hobbie Twixxy on the Y&Y classified web pages. Both in your sort of price range. if you just want to sail for some fun these might be worth a look. Although the 15 isn't the best cat around by all accounts. the twixxy might be worth a look?

An I14 can't break more than my Tornado

but it must have more to break than a Dart 18

Well it depends how you treat it! The only thing that's broken majorly on my 14 is when i was caning along on a 2sail reach in a nice gentle force 6 the shroud plate decided to go walk abouts. But apart from general wear and tear nothing major!

Be wary of estuary sailing with anything with long dagger boards. Dart18 would be best bet (no dagger boards at all). Hurricane is surprisingly accessible as first cat (doesn't pitchpole like D18) but is very heavy to recover from capsise and to pull up slip.
