How old is your Son ? I was helming a Dart 18 at 12 years old. For that price you are probably looking at Dart 18, Sprint 15 (Dart 15) or an old Hurricane (which might be a bit much for kids). or an old Nacra / Prindle.

Got to be a Dart with that list. If you get a good one and look after it you will also be able to sell it on when the kids get older. Problem with the prindle, nacra type of stuff is it's a bit harder to shift |

don't know a load about cat's but there's currently a Hobie 15 and a Hobbie Twixxy on the Y&Y classified web pages. Both in your sort of price range. if you just want to sail for some fun these might be worth a look. An I14 can't break more than my Tornado

Well it depends how you treat it! The only thing that's broken majorly on my 14 is when i was caning along on a 2sail reach in a nice gentle force 6 the shroud plate decided to go walk abouts. Be wary of estuary sailing with anything with long dagger boards. Dart18 would be best bet (no dagger boards at all).
