I bought this last week.
Has anyone any ideas who may have built her or how old she is?

As found- in the sin bin at Queen mary - Morning

covered in black goo

Surprisingly she is all glass. I originally thought she was a composite

Isn't stepping the mast by yourself a pig! lol

After a bloody good clean up - Afternoon

Nice strong hull- no sign of osmosis either!

After first sail

Nice calm day at the pond

Bloody mian halyard shackle jammed!

I am going to race her eventually in the club comps as her rig is in good order and the hull is too.

but is there a bit of mast pre-bend above the hounds (last photo)?

it's a crying shame there are so many more scrapheap challenges out there to potentially add to you profile thunderchild

D'ya  know I bloody love it when someone rescues an old bonfire boat and gets it sailing again!  Well done, looks fantastic!

Without being rude dare we ask what you paid for it?

Gold anodised spars I *think* went out of fashion in the mid 1970s...

And theres no chute which is a bit wierd.

We saw this boat sitting there at the SGP, nice to see shes on the water.

You might find more information or people to ask at http://www.sailfd.org - http://www.sailfd.org

Links to the international sites are at the top of that

The UK class secretry is a bit of an encylapedeia of what boats ended up where and that and the other countrys site are good as well, might need to make your computer do translations thought

The class secretary is definatly the best bet (think he's down as membership sec. on the FD website). You will need to give him the IRYU number of the boat, as the sail number will not necessarily match up to it's actual number. My old boat was K318 and had it's IRYU plaque on the rear of the cockpit on the centreline on the inner edge of the cockpit.

The boat may also have a builder number carved on the floor of the boat just forward of the centerboard case and behind the mast foot. that might also proove useful. If you can give him those numbers chances are he will have a decent history of the boat, and possibly a certificate for the boat, which will have to be copied and made out in your name.

My old boat was K318 and was apparently built in 1980, to give some idea of ages of boats, afraid I cant remember the plaque number though.

Good to see that boat has been rescued, we saw her on the way out of QM and wondered how she had got there, but so long as shes back in use that doesn't matter.

Surprised to hear she's all glass, looks very like a wwoden ship to me. Perhaps been sheathed with glass at some point. Further to my PM Thunderchild, I now think she could be an earlyish Mellows or perhaps a home-finished Bob Hoare hull from late 60's or early 70's. Does the previous owner have no info, like maybe who he bought the boat from? Might be able to trace history back to someone who knows the sail number!

Anyway, regardless of all that, they're fabulous boats so have fun!

i might do- if not just for the experience. Havent done much racing and would like to get into it a bit.
Where are they being held. Mind you- might have to give the road trailer a bit of a service! lol
Are the older boats still competative? - unlike my old 5o5

I am going to try and dig up a bit of history on the old girl- there is a sail with 220 on it in the boat but i have no idea if this is anything to do with the boat.
Anyone know of a 220?
Chris

I cant remember where they are all planned for, Oxford SC is the first towards the end of April, Rutland is the last at the end of October. In between "stuff" happens (I was paying lots of attention at the AGM )

There is meant to be a class training weekend either June or July at Rutland which would definatley be worth trying to get to also. Details should be in the class website.

As for how competative older boats are, the 2005 nationals was won by a 27yr old boat.....

220 would be late 60's/early 70's, so could well be right. I'll ask the Class Sec next time I speak with him. As to whether older boats are still competetive, it depends entirely on the boat. Even if you're not al that competetive, you'd still have a lot of fun and learn heaps at any/all of the Opens
