I think it has...there are plenty people out there sailing classes that don't have the clout of the big fleets and will probably do really well from such an organisation.  I never attended a FastSail event, but they were very succesful with big numbers and created a lot of interest for the symmetric boats.  Good work and good luck guys.

Yes its me! and the lovely helm of my 14 is indeed Mr Noyce!

TASA is a non-profit organisiation with the aim of getting like minded boats out of the compounds and back together out on the water... not under the TASA banner as it were (though we would like our own training days and some racing) the club and the site are more to bring ppl together to get them to events (which some people don't even know are out there!).. and bring the publicity up for events as a one stop site for what events they can attend. (we are NOT trying to replace the Yachts and Yachting forum! not that i think it could ever be done!)

our first issue though is to drum up interest and class association backing as they can help publicise.. hit south coast clubs (and elsewhere) and unis again to drum up more boats and helm and crew... publicise avaliable events to try and get ppl going.

although it might seem like we are aiming it at 'dead' classes and non competetive boats, we welcome any boat as long as it has a trapeze and aysmmetric

I'll stop boring you and shamelessly plugging us now

though if you do want more info you know where i am!

Basically it's a bit like Fastsail then...

Why don't you include single-handers? A Contender, a 600, have a trapeze and RS 700 and others have an asymmetric kite as well!

What about B14s and 59ers also, would much prefer to be in a handicap event racing against B14s opposed to buzz's and 3000s etc. Not having a dig at either of the classes but it reckon it would be better racing across the water. The Scottish Skiff Series have had the same discusion and boat eligiability is more based upon boat performance than whether a class has a kite and trap, hence the reason moths, 600s etc race within the series.

Agreed 49erHSC, the criteria for entry does seem a little arbitrary (ie the B14 is quicker than the majority of the boats on the list, but it is specifically excluded due to not having a trapeze).

Hey

Firstly i'd like to say thank you to everyone who has been showing an interest in TASA so far all these suggestions will be taken and put forward at the next meeting.

Olly_love thanks for your support

Though in the class section we only seem to have double handers we welcome any trapeze and Asymmetric boat, you will also see no classes like the Vago and such on there but they have a trapeze and asymmetric so would be more than welcome to come!

49erHSC you make a very valid point which in many ways i agree with, However we are a new organisation just starting out and would like to have definate criteria, and the easiest banner that the boats we are aiming to get involved is that they are fitted with a trapeze and an asymmetric. If we get a large well established group of active members and turn out to events is consistently high and the B14 and 59er guys would be interested in joining TASA, i can see no reason why the criteria could not be re-assesed to include them!

Thanks once again for all your suggestions they are all duly noted and will be brought up at the next meeting.

hope this answers some questions

no dig taken, and it would be intimidating for a relatively inexperienced 3000 crew to approach the line in a large fleet with all the bigger boats bearing down on them ... i was looking at TASA's mission statement though

seems to me TASA are setting out to cater equally for the 'lower classes' and the elite ... maybe racing could be split into two fleets, with separate starts and sailing parallel courses ... i took part in the Laser multiclass championship at Rutland a couple of years back, for 2000s, 3000s, 4000s and 5000s ... 150 boats in all ... each class had its own start, slowest to fastest, with the 2000s and 3000s peeling off to a parallel windward/leeward course after the first beat, and the 4000s and 5000s racing the main course ... worked really well ... the 4000s were the main organisers i think

The speed difference between 14s/5k and 3k/buzz/etc. would make this a good idea, even the tide ride had the the 14s out the way of everyone else I think!

Did the people behind TASA get the backing of the classes they have "adopted" before launching this site?

In short Rick yes and no....

We are of course looking for class backing for any class of boat that wishes to join, however say for example one class assocation wishes not to get involved as a whole, that doesn't mean that individual boat owners of the same class cannot join us..

We do however have interest from all the Class Associations that we have contacted.

so far we have 3000, 4000, ISO, BUZZ, Spice, RS800, international 14 and Cherub owners all registered on our site, without having any class assocations support us officially, as we are still talking to them.

Yellowhammer you make a very good point which Alex and i have been discussing and all the events for 2007 will be going up shortly on the site and forum (as we are still wait to hear back from various clubs and Class Associations RE: dates etc). You are right we are seeking to cater for the slower Trapeze and Asymmetric classes as well as the faster ones, our whole aim is to get more people out and sailing!

Hope this helps

The CVRDA (Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association) do a similar thing with the older classes. We have had contact with many associations, such as Fireflies, Finns, Merlins, N12's & Cherubs, through the people who sail the older boats, but also class race. The assocations see it as a route to getting old, uncompetitive boats out racing again, and so building interest in the class as a whole. The TASA organization may well catch people who normally handicap race, and so have little to do with their class in general. They may well meet like minded people, and so get more drawn into the class association structure. I can't see how TASA does anything but help even the bigger classes. For the smaller classes, it should be a great route through which to run joint events.

Reckon Yellowhamer's comment about splitting classes is the way to go, possibly PY assymetrics above 900 and assy's 900 and less. The Scottish Skiff Series make sure their events don't clash with specific class events to ensure higher attendance levels for their own events. Getting the class associations on board would give much more credibility to the concept and help to establish it more firmly. As for training events, getting the right coaches is essential, if you have a bad training event, people will simply not go back to another one. Part of the key to the success to the Scottish Skiff series is all the training events have been well organised and almost everyone who attends the events, contributes input to moving the series forward. Well so my helm tells me........

Or maybe not ... just heard from a member who raced his V3000 for the first time last weekend:

After trouncing the Medium fleet last week in a F.4-5 (expected of any 3k when Buzzes are the only trapeze competition), raced in the Medium a F3 today with similar result, and in the afternoon in a mere F.2 in a 30-boat all-club race. Those conditions were death in the Laser 3k on 1030 and we'd have wound up 4th or 5th on PY at best, but we got a 2nd to the RS400, racing on 1010, beating the lesser 4000's, a 59'er, an MPS and an 800 on the water.

Another option for a first event could be to pick up on a scheduled combined classes event (say N12s & Cherubs) at a fairly large venue, and persuade other CAs to include it into their calendar. Have to act fast though TASA as calendars for 2007 are now being finalised by clubs and classes. Any of the trap/assy CAs have anything suitable to offer?

hey Windspirit

just received your letter to TA CAs ... good work, although i'm not sure it's for 3000s at this stage, maybe you need to concentrate on the higher performance end of the market to begin with

you say no cost to CAs ... interested to know what's the fee for our CA members to sign up with TASA, or is it a free service run by enthusiasts from the participating classes?

no criticism ... it has the makings of a great initiative

TASA is a non profit organisation basically set up to get more boats our on the water!

There is no cost to join TASA and as we plan to cover existing events to start and there will be no costs from us there. As we introduce our events in the future.. (we're aiming to have one early next year) there will be a minimal fee to cover and hire costs for the venue etc.

We're here to get boats out on the water not to make any money at all, All the fees for website and publicity and time spent we have put in ourselves due to the fact we really think with the support of Trapeze and Asymmetric sailors out there we can really get a strong group together and large numbers of boats back at events!

we have an AGM on the 9th of December if anyones interested about getting involved or finding out more. PM me if you want any more details
