Hey

Im 14 and i mainly sail 2 man boats but now my crew can only go to big events with me so im stuck for club races. Im About 8 stone and i would like advice on a singlehander i could get.

I can go up to £2000, any suggestions??

Topper has got to be high on the list. Cheap, plenty of racing, plenty of coaching, right weight.

Easy-  Topper. Too light for anything bigger  in competitive terms. To be honest you could do with putting on a stone and a half to be the optimum weight for a topper- but I was lyour weight when I was 14, and I got to 9.5 stone when I was 15.

You can get a brand new boat for £2000! I'd advise you to spend less than that on a decnt 2nd hand boat with all the racing kit, for £1600 you can get a 3 year old boat that is fully kitted out. What club are you at?

I would agree go for a topper then in about two years get a radial

Im at west kirby sailing club, yeah the topper sounds good but the only problem is that there is no fleet at the club (actually there is not many fleets there just the usual).

Yeah i'll think about the topper, any other suggestions so i can widen  my search.

Thanks

To be honest you've really got to look at what is being sailed at your club.  You've got quite a few options open to you.  Yes a topper would be fine but ive never really liked them and always looked at them as ironing boards on water but thats just my personal opinion.  You'd be okay for racing in a laser 4.7 too, and also a byte CII - they look fantastic boats and might have a good future ahead of them.  Alternatively you could just be a bit of a lightweight radial sailor.  I sailed a radial for ages at 8 stone but it does mean you have to do a hell of a lot of work for relatively little speed.

You could manage in a radial- however because you're at West Kirby you're likely to get a lot of breeze .  If i were you I'd prefer a boat I could take on  the tide there in aforce 5 plus, than one I'd struggle with in  medium winds on the marine lake.

If you are planning on doing the open meeting circuit then the topper one is one of the best in the country in the North West, I did it for three years and learn loads and had a lot of fun too. If it's just for club racing: what singlehanders are there at WKSC that race?

Err West Kirby sails lasers, optimists and illutions and thats it for singlehanders really so not really much choise.

I could always just sail the handicaps because quite a few take place on a weekly basis. In the handicaps there are 2 finns, about 4 solos, larks, 1 Rs 200, Phantoms, sometimes a laser 4000, Rs 300,  fireflys, GP14s, sometimes a 420, fireflys, cadets, Oppies and one albacore.

So i could just sail in handicap races either on the lake or the tide as at this time of year they're always on the tide.

If i sailed handicaps i'd like a fast boat but wont be really hard to control.

Thanks again

If your just after a club racing boat and your 2 man is your main focus i'd say the Byte CII.  Much nicer to sail than either the topper of Lasr 4.7.  There should be a new supplier v. soon and you can pick up a good second hand hull and put on a brand new CII rig and have change from 2K.  FOr any questions PM me.

laser4.7 is better than Byte CII for class racing. if you don't mind racing handicap all year, then the Byte is fine

lasers are horrible to sail! I have never sailed a Byte but im guessing it cant be worse than a laser. They look cool too.

How long do you guys think it'll be before i can sail something like a RS 300 with the small rig? I think it may be a while im just curious. I'd love a boat thats a bit different like it!

Got any ideas?

I posted this on another thread along the same lines as this one. ( just ignor the ttext about your daughter etc.)

In terms of how long to sail a RS300... depends on you. How much you sail and how good you get and how much you grow.

But for now...

The boat you need to look at is a SPLASH.

A fantastic combination of hull, sails and mast. Huge in Europe ( 200 odd at events )  and 60 odd at the UK Nationals. Your daughter will be able to feel what she is doing, de-power when she needs to and when she capsizes she'll be able to get back in it. And she won't out grow it off it for a very long time. You can upgrade the boat with a bigger sail and longer boom - Then it is called a FLASH and sail competitively over 18.

http://splashdinghy.org.uk/ - http://splashdinghy.org.uk/

Basically the SPLASH is like a Europe without the hassle of a ultra low boom. And your son will love it in a breeze, in-fact you'll need two because he'll love it in all conditions so much.

This boat was designed for people who have outgrow the Oppie and are not big enough for Lasers e.t.c So in short your two children.

My wife has one, she is 7 stone and 5". We bought it for her to get back into sailing and then to hand down to our son who is 9 and currently 3.5 stone who sails a Oppie. He sails it when it is light. We paid £1200 for ours, and it was in very good condition. They are FANTASTIC! And I would say that about many boats.

here are a couple pics from the worlds...

SPLASH sailor, I guess about the same size as your daughter?...

and on the Blackwater...

29er rip off lol!

The Splashes and Flashes are very big on the East Coast, particularly in Norfolk.  It all depends on what they sail where you sail really.
Alternatively buy Jack Sparrows MX-RAY for big kicks!

As we've established there isn't a fleet of 4.7s at West Kirby I'm guessing getting a 4.7 for fleet racing is probably not a goer.  Get a sail in all your potentials and decide which one you will enjoy sailing as it's gonna be handicap you need to enjoy the boat.

If you're wanting a 4.7 for fleet racing, why not get a Topper- much better and bigger fleet.

If you just want a easy tough boat then you can sail a Pico at 8 stone.  Cheap plenty about, simple and few parts to go wrong and very easy to sell.

To be honest you are going to be an awful lot heavier for an RS300 even for the A rig. I have had one for years and would suggest 11 stone for the smaller A rig one as a minimum and 13 for the B. If in doubt try one before buying and you will see what I mean
