After the 200 Inlands (breezy) my knees were killing  from drop hiking . Yesterday I  lenghtened my toestraps  so my legs are flatter- this seemed to help a little. Are there any techniques to save your knees- I'm now finding my tennis game going to pot. is there anything i can do without going to the physiotherapist- will do if necessary- but would rather not.

I'm gonna get it out the way and say it now before anyone else does.... ever thought about a trapeze?!

Sorry, had to do it... I'll let someone more knowledgable answer as my hiking experience is limited and i was in pain for the whole week at the scorp nats!

I think you are better shortening the straps and straight leg hiking. The more experienced I get, the shorter my toestraps seem to be!

I think that when you straight leg hike you are working with your body to lift your weight over the side and so your body is working properly, the problem arises where you are 'hanging' your body weight from your knees when you are more relaxed.

Truth.

In the 200 you will probably need to loosen off the straps rather than tighten them since they are fixed quite far below the sidedeck as you noted. Straight legged hiking requires them to be high in the boat.

You may notice it is really hard work but you also maximise your righting moment

There was a thread on hiking and knee problems a while back. Anyway, the straighter the legs the less force on you knees. Hiking off the toes helps keep your legs straight too.

When I sailed the RS200 I had very long toe-straps.....ok I am only 5.3ft, but even the taller crews opted for longer toe-straps just because they found them more comfortable so could hike longer without being in complete agony but also it didn't hurt their knees quite as much.

Also, when it comes to hiking style, the 200 is a complete pain for it! In the really strong winds, it's best to straight leg hike more as that way you are stretching your weight out as far as possible....whereas in winds like force 2-4, I found it generally better to bent leg hike. Unfortunately......you're always gonna end up with slighty sore knees after hiking, no matter what style you use....one of the reasons I have now given up hiking boats is because I was having problems with my knees....which actually put me out of 3 opens in the RS200 this year, the inlands being one of them

Straight leg hiking protects your knees, this is obviously easier in some boats than others!!!

If you hike properly you will not have sore knees as the hiking will actually help strengthen the muscles which support the knee...
