Hi All
The 300 class are looking at possible future Venues for the next nationals we have a specific wish list as we don’t want to go inland we have a few ideas but they are mostly in the south and we would like some up North/off the south coast.
Are wish List!
Relatively flat water (no huge waves)
easy launching (we don't want any more broken masts)
nearby camping if possible.
Any Ideas??

New Quay in Wales was awesome for the cherub nats last year. Lovely little harbour for launching out of and then an amazing area for racing (my only niggle with the place was that there was bugger all wind when we were there but that could happen most places!)

Saundersfoot in Wales is very good I have heard from those that have been. My personal favourite is Mounts Bay.

RS 300s did filey in 2005 and there were some muchus biggus waves on the course and launching and recovering was tricky, only one brokem mast tho.
Tynemouth or South shields good be a goa. South Shields is easier launching but both are inside the harbour and even in a srong south east swell you can still get out of tynemouth. As for birds....newcastle???

Good place for training. Crap for a championship venue as you are constantly messing about in stupidly tidal water or shipping channels!

Largs is crap to sail at. Tenby or New Quay in Wales get my vote. Largo Bay is the best place i have ever sailed, go there, it's great and the people are so friendly!

Abersoch in N Wales is good, big courses in Cardigan Bay, protected launching, great little holiday village, but I think you need to book several years in advance
Pwthelli, just down the coast might be an option, but is possibly more oriented towards big boats and the town has less 'charm'

Herne Bay in Kent. Simple tidal system, excellent organisation (including Beach crew to get you out of the water quickly if the waves/wind get up) and it's in the nice bit of Kent between the Medway and Thanet. I grew up there so could be biased but the Albacore (90+) Lark (100+) and Europe (80+) fleets all had major champs there and loved it.

I'd vote for Largo Bay where we had our Nationals this year. THere are some rocks, but they are well marked and there is a nice big gap to get in. I don't remember any serious waves when launching. The moths were managing just fine which is a great advert.
The club was very friendly, very well organised, we had fabulous social events, lots of camping nearby and plenty of room on the beach for rigging.

Oh yes, and I almost forgot. Isle of Sheppey Sailing Club. The Javelins had a brilliant national there recently. Great facilities, great water, steady wind, very good web cam and weather station, and the new crossing is now open I believe.

The Scottish 300 guys have been to Largo many times and I dont tink there are many fleets out there which know it better. Some of them have a holiday house in the village which they come to every year!

How about Shoreham near Brighton? Theres a slip from the dinghy park into a small, sheltered harbour, then you sail out to sea. Same bit of water as Lancing but infinately better launching.
Only possible issue is the nightlife in Brighton may not be exactly to the 300 boy's tastes. at least I assume it's not ;o)

Sorry my swell comment was a sarcastic dig at Calum who promised us big swell and apparently people saw big waves on the first day but went un-noticed by myself and hoppy
Largo is the shizzle, kitchen staff have a bacon roll and drink meal deal which is really something special. 2 good local pubs and double whiskey and coke for £2.30... and did i mention irn bru on tap?! what more could you ask for?!

Indeed - sailing elsewhere has shown me what a great place to sail at SHoreham is . However i'm not sure that we do nationals anymore, can't recall any - i supppose there is no harm in asking though.
Largo Bay was also brilliant for the Cherub nationals as the others have said

The very best venue for the 300 nats would of course, and as you well know paul, be Todbrook!! Cheap beer in the Board Inn and of course the best girls in the North West.

On a serious note, when I was 300 rep the issues generally were: clubs often wanted a min fleet size, and often wanted to run on one course. If they wanted 40, that was fine, cos we shared with the Varios, but if they wanted 100, it wasn't practical to put us on the same course as the 200's, despite the fact that they were the fleet with the most Totty ( sorry for the sexist comment, but it's true).
The event at Filey was a big success, but might not have happened as nobody turned up for the open they held the season before, but after we'd organized the nationals.
The typical discussion before we chose was, "why can't we go to...", and the answer was usually either: "they don't want us", or "they cost too much"!
The question should've been: where can the 300's go that will suit them, that wants them, and that can do the event at a time that suits the fleet?
I got so much stick over the Brixham event ( timing mainly, but also location) that I sold my boat and gave up as class rep, despite the fact that it turned out to be a well run event at a great location, that was pretty well attended!
I wish you luck...

Just another thought: one of the strengths of the RS fleet is the "family" aspect of it all, and my best champs was Weymouth with the 400's and 600's. Great venue and good company, camping within walking distance and food on site. We sailed in the harbour and got good conditions without too much tide (unlike Lee the next year, where tide was the king), and I got within 6ft of the Dolphin! Superb!
