So... you think you want to design and build your own boat, and sail round the world?

Fair enough

A lot of people have that dream, very few have the determination to carry through with it.

This guy does

Non stop

In an 8ft boat

Brave guy with a dream, or utter nutcase?

He does seem to have a lot of self belief, but while he seems quite willing to die for the sake of not having an epirb etc, i'm surprised his wife or other friends would be that comfortable with it.

how many miles do you reckon he'll get before the coast guard have to go and rescue him?

I'm gobsmacked.

Have you seen the HUGE list of electronic items? How on earth is he going to power them? I can only see one really puny solar panel in the pics!

I think he'll abandon the attempt after the sea trials

I do like his engineering logic though... if its under high load: use a thicker bit of ply

so I was thinking about my new Tfoil, and...

that guy must be absoloutley mad.

does he seriously think the boat isnt going to fill up with water and if it does has he got a pump, he didnt say anything about that in the article. how will he "rescue himself" if he gets into difficulties, i give him 3 weeks if the weather is nice and about 3 days in the southern ocean if he makes it that far.

How long til he starts drifting out to sea?

How long til the coastguards tow him and his boat (or whats left of it) back into a port 5 miles down the coast from where he sets off?

Found this update....

" mailto:chuck_dm@yahoo.com - Harley 10 Aug 06 22:26

Hi All! Have had some delays, with my ground crew quitting and problems with the sails, but I am just about finished hand-stiching a new set and have hired a new ground crew AND a back-up ground crew to get me to testing grounds and launch point. The new date of departure is the weekend of the 19th and 20th of August. A bit late but still inside my planned window of opportunity. I would like to remind everyone that my satellite unit may lose power at some stage during the voyage. Water and electricity are not good mates. This does NOT mean that anything is wrong. DO NOT report me missing under ANY circumstances. I shall try to get word out with my VHF to passing ships who will hopefully relay messages to my spouse. I will have her send updates to Chuck so he can keep you informed. -Harley"

Apparently it put in this weekend in Canda where it promptly started to leak through the rudder bolts.  Apparently all that was needed was a bit of goo and to unpack everything and dry it....mmmmmmm

Hmm, I see they're collecting money for him. Who in their right minds would contribute to that?

I wonder what the moral implications would be if one donated money, which directly enabled him to carry on and subsequently kill himself...

you could only get done for assisted suicide if you knew he would die on his voyage. so i think it will be fine as long as none of us contibute.

i think anyway, im not sure.
