Ok, having sailed on and off during my school years, i've now left uni got a proper job and bought myself a laser which i'm currently sailing badly around bough beech. But already i'm looking for something more interesting, and am looking at the Finn, cos i'll prob be sailing down at Bosham, where there is quite a fleet, now my question is are they really that difficult to sail, and will it take long for me to be able use it properly? I think i'm the right dimensions for Finn sailing at 6'2" and i'll admit to around 14 stone, plus i've had no experience with trapezes. |

Go for it. I've been hankering for one for ages and love it. Some strength is required, but I've found it very easy to dump the power by allowing excessive twist in the sail if it all gets a bit hairy (although be careful with the excessive twist on a run...)  |

Just get one. The best boat I have ever owned (but also the only thing of value when the tax man wanted paying). They are easy to sail but hard to master. Speak to the guys at Boshm or contact Phil Laycock through the British Finn Association, I am sure someone will be able to arrange a test sail for you. -------------

Can I be so bold as to offer the phantom as an alternative? It may not be an Olympic class but it goes well and is a good My advice try both before you buy!

Ok so it looks like people recommend the finn then. I've got a boat i can try down in bosham, and i was down last tuesday to play, but force 5 winds and a 1 o'clock low water, i thought better part of valour and i'll wait for more suitable conditions. Hopefully i'll be able to get a go on it in a couple of weeks now. The only problem is how steep the learning curve is, as i was sailing mostly 420's in victoria docks before, so it'll be quite a jump to a Finn in tidal waters, though hoepfully a laser in a resevoir is a good step in between. |

You will be fine. The learning curve will be attainable, the tidal waters will probably be more of a challenge that getting the Finn going. However, the squad guys are so far ahead of most of the fleet it brings you back down to earth with a bump. Let us know how you get on. -------------
