1.  Urm why would you want to?  Much more fun getting wet.

2.  If you must, use a Cat preferably an indestructible dart 16.

Taught my kids by hiking out the opposite side in a F2.  Admittedly you need a fat dad on one side and a thin kid on the other!  But tacking is good fun.

But this is wiring land drills. Bit more difficult to do wire to wire tacking in light stuff

The whole point as far as i know is to practice getting from one wire to the other in the most efficiant way. It is easier to learn on land and pratice will make manouvers out on the water that little bit easier to complete.

I've just purchased a Contender and will definitely be doing land drills before sailing it... getting under the boom will require practice.

I have an RS800 which i havnt quite got the hang of yet, weve been advised to try land drills, but how do people recomend we tie the boat down to do so, we tried the tie down cable in the dinghy park but that didnt work as it moved too much, allowing the boat to heel a very long way. Ive watched higher and faster and it doesnt seem obvious how they do it, it looks like they just took the wheels off the trolley and put the boat on the beach.

It is quite entertaing on a contender to get the hang of getting under the boom. If you have got your kicker tight enough it will most probably require releasing before you go for a tack but you can always try squeezing through!

Tie two long bits of rope to the hounds and tie the ends as guys to heavy objects. One each side of the boat.
