i have never found my boots to smell if they are constantly being used, i normally get smelly boots if they are left for abit of time wet. Whatg sort of smell is it is it more of a wet suit smell or a bad feet smell?

I had same problem ages ago.......

Try a few pumps of anti bact hand wash in each boot, leave to soak in bucket of water....rinse well or you will have foaming feet!

I find a cold water rinse after every sail works wonders (I use the machine at home, slow spin of your boots fall apart after a while).

Once the smell is there though it is a nightmare to get rid of!

My boots smell of roses  but if you do suffer washing them with Milton does seem to do the job.

I would not use detergents of any sort as you feet will slide around inside the boot for ages ...

"Value" pine disenfectant from a well known supermarket does the trick - about 30p for half a season's worth of washes!!

Some people have more sensitive skin than others, so might not be able to, but I don't limit this to the boots - it works just as well with wetsuits and gloves.

Doesn't seem to do any harm to the sailing kit - my boots are now about three years old and have been cleaned in this way at least once a week.

You can just leave your kit to soak in water mixed with shampoo, comes out ok!

I think what started the stench was Rolling his (er...my mate that is) main up on the Lawn behind the club, it was raining hard and the grass was covered in rabbit droppings. The sail then went on to his kit bag in the back of the car. It then drained into his kit. ( He was tired and emotional at the time and just wanted to get home and dry)

He's going to try some of these remedies but will probably end up Nuking them.

Anything to get rid of bacteria.
I found anti-bac hand soap a little too frothy if not rinsed really well, especially if the boots are largely composed of neoprene.
The cheapo pine-fresh disinfectant gives me a rash, so I use the slightly more expensive version.
There's a big black bin in our garden, for sailing gear only. It's full of water and disinfectant and gets changed at least once a week. When we come back from sailing, all wet gear goes in there overnight and gets dried during the week. Recalcitrant smelly boots get the Oxy-Clean treatment: 1 spoonful of Oxy-Clean in a bucket overnight, rinse a bit, no foam, no smell!!

The other thing to remember is to dry the boots fairly quickly, with plenty of air to circulate. Headfry and I have got the same garden decor: sailing boots on bamboo canes   Chelsea Flower Show next year, headfry??

I can recommend a product appropriately called "500 PSI Stink Guard" which I bought at a Dive shop on Swanage pier last year for £4.20. It comes in a 4oz pump spray and is very effective. You only need one short spray into each boot to do the job and the bottle will last ages I should think. We've got 3 sailors in the family and I'd been looking for something like this for years!! I would imagine there's a good chance that other dive shops would stock it. I've found this non-UK site which illustrates it:- http://www.sharpdiver.com/product_info.php/products_id/157?o sCsid=d0cc6a6a007

A friend at my club reckons sticking them in the freezer before washing gets rid of the smell.

I'd try it myself but my wife has threatened me with....well lets just say it would be very painful, if I even went anywhere near the freezer with the boots.

Gonna have to get some of that if only for the name. But does 500PSI relate to pressure induced by the odour or the pressure of spray required to kill it.

I don't think my boots will cope with 500 PSI after the amount of spin cycles they've been through but I have to find something as the washing machine burst open during the spin and kept going in protest until it had spat out the majority of my sailing kit

there must something ,more inventive you can do with 500 psi of boot destinker...

how about using it to play a game like darts but with wetsuit boots as a board.

childs boots for more points. size 13 boots for less points. bonus if you play outside in the wind

I think it stands for Putrid Shoe Insides, 500 being the cc's of oxygen you need after sticking your hooter in a boot.
