So what was the out come of the two Ents that set out in January of 1956 to cross the channel? It sound srather cold to say the least. Did they really do it? was it just publicity and did they sail off round a headland?

good effort for them anyway

The Hornets used to race across the channel in the 50s and 60s dont think it was in january though.

The moths and cherubs have talked about a cross channel race on a few occasions... I suspect that would be a little warmer than a pair of ents in january however.

I don't think that foiling moths would like the iceburgs.

A couple of friends of mine did the crossing for the anniversary.

It took 4 1/2 hours to cross and 6 hours to return !

Is that because they were weighed down by all the booze and fags?

Got an old RYA yearbook somewhere (60's I think) which describes such a race with Hornets and 505s (and others). One problem seems to have been that the safety boats took at least an hour longer than the fastest dinghies (no outboards and RIBs in those days).
