I won the top club report prize in Yachts and Yachting for our Uni club's event, result!

Check out the new Y&Y in the club reports.

Maybe I should be a writer instead of a lawyer....

Same thing, ain't it? Just a question of whether anyone understands what the hell you've written!

Speaking as a sailing journo turned lawyer, I think you're between a rock and a hard place; do you choose the crappy job or the crappy money?

Hmmm... it can be a crappy job if your not working for the right people!

Why'd you switch from Sailing Journo to lawyer Chris?  Luckily I'm not a lawyer yet, got a training contract but I could worm my way out of that...

It can be hard working in the sport you love. You never get any time off, I always felt embarrassed if I was in the industry and not winning each weekend, and you're always sort of on show at the club. The other thing that worries me is that you suffer "capture" in the admin. law sense; you start seeing everything from the viewpoint of the industry and here that means you want everyone to spend lots of bucks sailing fast boats, and dismiss those who don't.

We all know government bodies suffer from capture, I'm sure magazines have the same problem and it is damaging to the sport. I think the Y&Y staff try to avoid it, but it's very difficult.

Having said that, you do get ruined for a real job. It was really something to be running a national windsurfing mag and be able to wear boardshorts into the beachfront office, then walk out do test boards when the wind picked up. It's also not bad to get flown to regattas, or sit on the photo boat at the Farr 40 worlds in Newport RI, periodically coming alongside an 80' powerboat for a coffee or margharita transfusion.

No wonder I only lasted about 6 weeks working in a solicitor's office before moving into a freelancing insurance role working from home or the beach!
