Just seen this press release from Rooster. £995 for a brand spanking new kiddies singlehander.

How could you possibly go wrong? I've only seen these pics, but it looks a great little boat for any junior starting out sailing. For £1195, you get a Tera Pro which looks about as lively as a Topper. Anyone know how much you're looking at for a new Topper? I can't find prices on their website. (Which could explain why they keep going bankrupt...)

I've only seen the brochure on the Tera, haven't seen one in the flesh yet. More of a competitor to an Oppi rather than a Topper I would have thought. (Length 2.87m, beam 1.23m, weight 33kg). Looks a bit more like a "proper" boat than an Oppi (sorry Oppi types), but against that you won't have a class assocation, fleet racing, or a circuit. We did consider it as a junior trainer at my club, but we bought Oppi clones instead (even cheaper) as we saw them as more of a transition to proper Oppi racing.

Hav you seen the groove in the bow? You could easily attach a mast head kite to the boat along with a jib . You could turn it into a plastic cherub

Look far more like a little feva rather than a topper - I'd be frightened if I was behind either though.  Quality must be good for Steve C to offer it and the price is simply amazing.  Always suspected the margins on roto hulls were rather good ..... explains the rush by the 'usual suspects' to pile them high, but these people actually manufacture the hulls themselves so must surely have an edge.

Well maybe I'm just a sucker for cuteness (having small children does that to you) but I want one now, and considering the amount of water at Scaling Dam currently I'd be tempted to have a go myself.

Great name as well!

Daggerboard in the wrong place for that. Easily make it into a baby Musto Skiff though.

Jim i think your onto something there!  Give it a monster main and rake the mast back, raise the angle of the boom and simply add a trapeze.  And it does look like that dip going from mast to bow along the centreline is just screaming for a kite pole to be slotted in!!  Mwah Ha Ha, the all new TERA SKIFF!!

So we need an RS300 rig, some carbon fiber & resin, an RS200 kite, some trapeze wire and a tera hull.

I'm prepared to loan my old RS300 sail & boom so long as I can have a go in it! :D

i think you might need a slightly different mast from a 300, are you sure it would hold a trapeze? how about shortening a 600 mast?

ps i want a go too

nothing with a 200 sized kite can make claim to being a skiff...

It would have to be mast head!!! What about some T-Foils? And Maybe Some Racks so you could keep the full 6 rig and just extend the racks to suit the wind or sailor weight. What about a self tacker as well?

Oh no Steve C's Kiddy Trainer has turned in to a Mini Cherub!!

I've still got this kite in the garage - about 13.5m2 and 5.5m hoist height...

Got a broken (but easily repairable) angel 600 mast that only works with a reefed 600 sail - don't wanna risk t'other one tho.  Sounds like a great idea tho - here's that single handed miniskiff we've been after then.  I reckon we should keep it without a jib but i think the 200 kite would be too small.  T-foils though

no the 29er kite is too "phat"  15ish metres.  something around 10metres would probily best i imagine.

29er kite sounds about right to me. Great on windward/leeward. But a bit of a beast on a beam reach.

Well don't go on a beam reach then . set only windward/leewards. It could be the class(tera) course. Also i think the tera would probably need the longest genni pole as pos. To keep the nose out of the water to stop uber pitchpoles also it would look rele cool! Wat do we reckon a 4000 sized genni pole? if it doesnt fit center then why not make it offset?

how longs a 4000 pole? how longs the tera?

actualy why not have the pole out the back of the boat

Posted By: BBSCFaithfull
Date Posted: 17 Feb 06 at 8:11pm
the 4000 pole is probs about 6ft and a bit long
its a beast but it would give the tera an immense amount of bow lift. Failing that why not hav an 18ft skiff style pole which is fixed?

My pole is going to be too short for my new rig at 9ft... 6ft is nothing

what sort of length, 9 ft

ps i ment 4 the tera 18ft skiff style pole.

Posted By: laser47
Date Posted: 17 Feb 06 at 9:32pm

so let me get this straight you'd end up with a former kiddy trainer with a pole practically longer than it is and a huge ass sail, hmmn you might have somthing there

go for it!

Also would it be a good idea to have an MPS style boom so to allow for crew movements.

On the subject of little kiddies boats, does anyone remember what that Bic
boat was called at the london boat show? IIRC it was a bit
'windsurferish' (surprise surprise), but looked quite fun if you're a small type

Posted By: laser47

35 kg isn't that like moth weight? no way could it be that light

-------------

Posted By: Isis
Date Posted: 18 Feb 06 at 6:09pm
over modern moth weight but still light... there isnt much of it and its not going to be taking high stress at any point so its feasable. Chances are its hull weight only though.

-------------

Posted By: mike ellis

nothing made of plastic can be that light

Posted By: laser47
Date Posted: 18 Feb 06 at 9:52pm
if it was very thin low density rotomoulded plastic it could be. but then it would be really stupidly weak

huh? then wouldn't it be a moth by another name
