Can anyone recommend a non-trapeze, singlehander for a 50 year old weighing about 70kg?  Preferably quite modern, quite fast but fairly easy to handle.  Thinking of a Blaze at the moment but not quite sure.

Supernova? Might not be the right street cred, but it's got a good PY and seems easy enough to handle. Besides, there are uglier boats!

What about a Phantom. Carry a large weight range and are handicap bandits in the rights winds although maybe a bit physical for your friend!

Well for me its gotta be the RS300 if you can find one. I think you a bit too light for a Phantom. The Supernova is a good boat easy to sail but slow where as the 300 great boat very quick can be a bit demanding but we do have a 65 year old sailing one who does really well. The rig is spot on and easy to de-power. Defiantly would be my choice check out are website for a test sail at a local club near you if your unsure. We are having are Winter Champs at Northampton SC this weekend.  http://www.rs300.com/ - www.rs300.com

Had you thought about the Laser Radial??? The masters circuit is absolutely fantastic. All those who went to Brazil last year had a great time!!!

I'd say you're about spot on with the Blaze. They also appear to have a very friendly and active association. I've never sailed one, but judging by the increase in numbers built and attendance at opens since the re-development I would say that the association are doing something right. Worth a test sail at the very least....

Thanks guys.  I think my friend will go for the BlazeX but he's gonna have a look at the RS300. Solo - doesn't look cool enough, same with supernova.

70 kgs is a bit light for the 300 big rig unless you're very fit/good, (tho I think they've changed the rules so you don't have to use the small rig at that weight), and I always got the impression that the Blaze needed about the same weight as the 300. I may be wrong, but maybe one of the singlehanders aimed at lightweights would be better? I'm thinking Laser rad, streaker, Byte, or maybe a Solo with a wavelength rig. It can be pretty miserable overpowered in a singlehander, believe me! Don't get me wrong, the Blaze looks lovely, but the rig looks pretty powerful. Depends where you sail, of course, if you're on a lake or the open sea...

this is true, but it can also be fantastic fun, and sometimes a bit of an advantage! i sailed a laser full rig for a season when i was 13, weighing in at about 55-60kg, its sprisingly easy to win in light winds. lol. just hard upwid in a f5!!! i then demoted my self to a radial for 2 years, lovely boat and lovely people & theres always competition near. i would say test sail all the possibilities and pick your fave out of the bunch.

If he has some previous sailing experience, how about a low rider moth? there's a guy at my club in that sort of age group that campaigns a moth and an IC!

A few 300's advertised from £1,900 to £3K on RS300.com.

Rob.e - you know you want to! By the way your old B rig mast is still going stong

Rules have changed - any weight can sail any rig but you can only change rigs once a year.

Yeah, if I could find a fleet....

Good rule change, glad they got it through in the end, it needed doing!

How're you getting on with the bigger rig?

Better than the small rig! Pointing is better and the boat seems to more positive and "balanced" - although this is probably due to my unique sailing ability!

Sold my old rig and got the money back so a good deal all round.

The rule change is the first ever for this class - truely a strict one design and that what makes it attractive on my part - other than the boat being such a blast to sail.

70kg might be a struggle in a Phantom unless your friends pond sailing...

Yes, I really noticed the "B" rig pointed better. It was a shame, cos the small rig was so much easier to sail, and I would've done as well with it if I could've pointed OK.

As for the one designness (if I can invent a word!) I have been truly amazed at the vitriol and unpleasantness in the Solo clas as they struggle to cope with modern materials (i.e. FRP). It is a good arguament for the modern designs, SMOD or not!

I cant wait to get my phantom picking it up soon.

I too tried the blaze but found my knees getting bruised from the rack? It may have just been me. Get the X if you do opt for this!

There do see to be a few International Canoes on the market at the moment, Try one it is the best fun on the water and not as in and outty as say a 600 or a moth!
