Is it worth having a combi road trailer if I'm not planning on taking the boat
out of the sailing club park? My experience is that they're a pain to drag the
launching trolley on and off of, and I've nowhere at home to keep one.

Unless the supplier is doing a boat show deal and throwing the combi and cover in for the usual price i wouldn't bother. You can always buy a roadbase later if you find you need it.

Waht boat do you have because if it is a reasonable small one (laser sized) they can be moved on the car roof anyway if you do need to move it somewhere.

Unless you are thinking about moving it around a lot of there is a deal i would say no dont get a trailer. if you do need to take it to a builder or somethign you could probably borrow one anyway.

Were you referring to resale value? If so then that is a different matter. Most people probably wouldn't buy a second hand boat without a trailer unless it was something that could be car-topped very easily.

Otherwise it's a no-brainer, if you don't need one don't buy one!

Good point re resale value.

Is it a pain having a road trailer under the boat all the time?

Possibly, but you can always store them in your
garage/garden

Don't bother they are a pain in the arse unless you need one. I've always been able to borrow one for the occasional trip.

It gives you something heavy to tie the boat to, stop it blowing away

If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right

don't bother, its just something else that can be stolen, or damaged which needs insuring.

I take the wheels off mine to stop them getting nicked. It's quite easy to park the boat on top of it as well as it sits lower.

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital
ingredient in beer.

No road trailer also makes your boat much less easy to steal

If you're not planning on using the trailer, don't bother buying one. If it just stays in the boat park not doing anything in long grass, it won't be much use after a few years anyway - bits like the wheels and hitch will go rusty, and you'll probably get flat spots on the bearings (if they don't rust up as well!).

A new trailer won't cost any more new (relatively) in a few years time when you come to sell the boat, and advertising a 5 year old boat with a brand new trailer makes it much more saleable than a 5 year old boat with a (possibly roadworthy) trailer!

Normally you don't. A lot of clubs have an area to store road trailers.

Thanks. I think the best option for me is not to bother.

Cheers

I've never been to a club with space to store trailers separately, and if its under the boat it's a pain for your neighbours (reducing space and catching their shins), it's a pain taking the boat on and off every time, and it makes the boat easier to nick! It does however give you something heavy to tie the boat to if it's windy...

We have seperate road trailer storage at Hunts. We do insist that all trailers are marked and at work party time each year we go through them. Any which are unroadworthy or unmarked are seperated and the owners informed (if known). If no action is taken then the trailers are cut up/sold off as required.

Persoanlly I keep my road base under the boat propped up so the road wheels are off the floor, I find it no bother to pull the trolley on and off it each time.

You surprise me. I've never belonged to a club that didn't. Mind you, when you want your trailer you generally find you have to move 30 others to get to it.
