firstly, are ultra 30s still sailed now?  And also, what do the other 5 sailors do when team members one steers, one does the mainsheet, one does the jib and one the spinnaker?

Sit around and reflect on the laws of physics that demonstrate why a big lumbering 30footer is a damn sight slower than an 18 I should think.

So we have a helm, a mainsheet man, a jib man, a spinnaker man, a cunningham man, kicker man, outhaul man.  Still leaves 2 to just sit there looking pretty!

I dont know about a didicated outhaul man but i wld imagine it prob takes a few people to carry out tacks gybes and kite hoists and drop. remember they are very big and powerfull boats.

id imagine youd have

1 bowman
1 pitman
1 helm
1 trimmer
1 tactician
1 kite packer
1 mainsheet guy
1 spinaker guy
and a crew boss to keep it all running (and to be waving a big flag with the sponsors logo on it for the TV coverage these things got)
