The ad. says "originally from an rs 600, but you can convert to use it on any dinghy. it has been used on other dinghys before so there a few extra small holes where we attached a spinaker etc".

So it's a 600 mast with various non-standard bits & holes (including the spreaders - the Angell 600 masts had the diamond arrangement which AFAIK has been unchanged since day 1).

Oops, sorry, shhhh....

the angel masts were also very very prone to breaking, they are the reason for the insurance being so high for the 600

Well yes, but that was principally due to the d*** silly alloy sleeve...

Really??? It took the big name spar manufacturers a long time to come up with anything anywhere near as good (esp. in classes which allowed spars from more than one source, and also during development to replace the Angell item for the 600).  As Jim says, the ali sleeve thing was a weak point.

no im not meaning across the board, im talking about the 600 masts that roger made, i used an angel mast on the moth and it was far better than the previous carbon effort it came with, very light and stiff in the lower section but with  good tip for the gusts

Ive got an angel stick on my moth aswell and its a bit more flexy than id like but does seem to be quite light and well built.

As for this mast getting to expensive 'at the end' stu, 1 second to go and the highest bid was a comfy £29 which I wouldnt call pricy. Admitedly inside that last second some chunt pushed it up to £56 but id still consider that to be pretty good value.

Turns out damage was just over 6.1m from the tip (at gooseneck height)

Anyone want to hazard a guess what combination of '6'  '.' and '1' makes up the length, in metres, of how long I needed my new mast to be?

Beut.

The 600 mast has a plastic track so id guess its not the old angel one, who makes the newer ones? superspars?

Yep superspars, bought mine today and it came with a new superspars mast with plastic track and a fairly old angel one (which was broken near the foot!).

Yeah but the aluminium's shattered inside and it can will only be able to be used as a reefed 600 sail (which is kind of for the best really!).  About 2 inches of the aluminium needs to be cut of the carbon mast but i don't know how to do it.  I've tried a hacksaw and chisel but that doesn't work.  Any suggestions??

I've always just been able to pull alloy sleeving out of carbon spars once all rivets were dealt with. Obviously you have to cut off anything that's distorted though. You could try warming up the carbon with a fan heater and running a hose down the alloy to shring that...

Nope, it was me.  Here it is...home made spreaders (carbon over balsa) and finished in International Perfection 2 pack.  Rigging was from Pete Bond at Severn Sailboats and somehow all the lengths and spreader angles were right first time (although it now has a little more tension in the caps giving more prebend)

Is your mast an angel one Iain? mine doesnt seem to have weave on the outer layer like that, the visable layer is uni fibres wrapped around at 30 degrees-ish and where it exploded around the gooseneck you can see where the fibres separated and twisted out
